Fences- the movie

I will probably wait until it comes out on video unless it needs to be seen on big screen. Excited that the library has my copy of the entire century cycle- 8 plays to go.
I must check out the library. I don't usually read plays, but your recommendations sound too enticing. I live in a small town, but we do often get first run movies. I'll be sure not to miss this one.
I read the play a couple days before I saw the movie. I went to see it Christmas Day and it was phenomenal!!!! Denzel did an excellent job of remaining true to Mr. Wilsons work. ALL of the characters were excellent selections, but my favorite character by far is Gabriel. I work closely with veterans that suffer from mental illness as a result of their service, a job I truly enjoy going to everyday. The play and movie are by far a masterpiece and I'm confident that they will be acknowledge as such during award time. Next up is Hidden Figures, I don't think this will be as phenomenal as Fences, very difficult to beat, but I am willing to give it fair a chance.
Went last weekend and I totally agree about the chemistry between Denzel and Viola. My husband and I were speechless when it ended.
I could go one day when the kids are at school. Because once a movie gets into the house, I'm the last person to get the DVD player. I have always admired Denzel's work and am looking forward to this.
The movie should win plenty of awards this year. I will try to see Hidden figures in the next couple of weeks
I saw the movie, LOVED IT! I would love to see the play if it ever does a run again. I hadn't thought of reading the play. What would be the difference in reading the play verses watching it played out? I'm just curious. This movie had me in my feelings so much that when I came home I blogged about it, and then I had a whole discussion about it on Facebook with my aunt and one of her friends.

I've recommended this film to everyone that I could talk to. This is definitely a MUST SEE movie! Seeing it in the theater as well as purchasing it when it comes out on DVD will help them get the MUCH deserved acclaim for this film. Please! If you can, go see it in the theater as well.
Carey, reading the play would give you a chance to see how amazing august Wilson is. Fences was the first play I have ever read because the movie was coming. I felt the same way about plays until I decided to expand my reading. Wilson has written several plays and I hope to read more this year. The piano lesson is another great movie based on a play by this same author
Carey I loved the play. I told my parents that I read it and they had nothing but praise for Wilson's playwright skills, having seen many live. Fences is part of Wilson's Century Cycle plays and 4 have won the Pulitzer. Wilson is that good. So good that Denzel was thinking of producing the whole series on HBO. Also I have a personal read the book before seeing the movie rule. That being said I need to see the movie.
Ok, so this will be my first play read. I'm assuming I will love Fences. So I bought seven of his other plays. Does anyone know if there is an order that I need to read them in? I have the following:
Fences
Two Trains Running
Seven Guitars
The Piano Lesson (sounds very interesting)
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Joe Turner's Come and Gone
King Hedley II
Gem of the Ocean
I'm not sure of the order. Fences read like a stand alone. Happy reading Carey.Joan you will love the movie
hmm i don't really read plays but i now listen to audiobooks and i had swore i hated being read to so i'll give it a try.
I thought the movie was great saw it on Christmas Day. I also read the play and thought it was riveting.

They area cycle of plays, each one taking place in a different decade of the 20th century. There's not particular order that needs to be followed, they are all stand-alones.

Thank you, just started "the piano lesson". Excited!
A character based novel or movie realistically depicted is what I look for. "Fences" is that. It's a great movie. See it if you haven't already!
The text was so rich and powerful and Denzel was perfect so pleased this brings Wilson back into the spotlight

I read the play and the movie was pretty close. I'm glad they did not change much from the play version
