I just read about this story and it sounds wonderful. It's not out yet so I haven't read it, but it might be worth checking out:

A woman and her children build a house without any experience, just by watching YouTube videos, as a way of healing from their abusive past.

I just read A Manual for Cleaning Women , short stories by Lucia Berlin. There was a ton of mothering in there, although much of it was tangled with alcoholism. They are fiction but loosely autobiographical, I believe.

Hi Victoria, I'm really not sure if this book fits your requirements but I'll suggest it anyway, as it is one of my favourite books I've read this year.

Little Deaths by Emma Flint

It's about the stigma of how a single mother should 'behave', set in the 60's or 70's I think. The children are sadly murdered, and the blame falls on the mother, with focus on her parenting skills, lifestyle etc. Feel free to dismiss it if it doesn't suit :)
