Wend (wends) | 99 comments Hard Times Hard Times by Charles Dickens by Charles Dickens. Absolutely loved A Christmas Carol, my first ever Dickens, need help with reading another, so hopefully we can read together.

I would like to nominate Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown.

Besides writing regular novels, this author writes a series of fun mysteries about Mrs. Murphy, a cat who solves mysteries.

To Wend...

Hard Times is pretty bleak reading for your second Dickens. There are others you might want to look at first. Maybe David Copperfield or Nicholas Nickleby? They're longer but have much more engaging stories. (HT is probable my least favorite of his novels.)

Just a suggestion.

I really liked Dickens' Bleak House as well. There is a strong female character, with a some very dramatic scenes. I have not read Hard Times yet, but the title doesn't sound very cheerful to me.

Wend (wends) | 99 comments Thank you Renee and Rosemarie, maybe I will try something a bit more cheery!
So although long can I change my choice to The Pickwick Papers (serialreader may well be used!)

Pickwick is a lot of fun. Basically a lot of ghost stories and humorous adventures strung together within the the overall story arc of this club of older gentlemen getting into stuff. There's a reason Dickens made his name on this one.

Pickwick is a lot of fun. I agree with Renee. It is an enjoyable book.

I'd like to nominate A Passage to India. It's on the State of the Nation list.

Wend, so you want to nominate Pickwick instead of Hard Times right?
