Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Starting out by contemplating if my current read, Lost in a Good Book can be used for no. 37, Wiltshire, as the main character works in Swindon. But the book is really all over the place.

message 3: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments At a quick page and chapter count, a bit over half the book is set in Swindon, and as the rest is divided between multiple locations, so Swindon is the main setting. So I've decided to use it for Wiltshire, because that means I have made a start. Yay!

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments No. 26: Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence is set in the area of Teversal in Nottinghamshire.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments It appears that The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot is set in Lincolnshire, even though it is based on Warwichshire. So... 21: Lincolnshire it is, I guess!

Kevin (superkev) | 29 comments Hello Leni. That's one hell of a challenge you've set yourself there! You did well just typing out the list! Good luck with the challenge. I was curious about Norway and whether it was divided into counties or regions at all, and how many there were?
Love the hair btw, very Bjork-like!

Hi Kevin! I actually just copied the list from another post. We're all mad here! I'm also reading around the world, and through all the US and Canadian states and territories. Progress is slow overall. LOL

Norway has 19 counties, so that would be a shorter journey. Now there's an idea... Although Norwegian books are harder to come by for me now that I live in the UK, so maybe not.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett is mainly set somewhere near Thwaite, which turns out to be in Richmondshire District, which again apparently is in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Phew, that Yorkshire is tricky to figure out. So that's 39A done.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments I'm not really getting on well with D. H. Lawrence, and didn't like The Fox by D.H. Lawrence at all. At least it had a mention of location (Blewbury), so I can scratch Berkshire off the list (as well as another book off the Boxall 1001-list).

You and me both, Lady C was fine, but 'Women in Love' was a chore. I doubt I'll be going back for more ;)

message 12: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments I have yet to meet anyone who liked 'Women in Love', Liz! But I still think I might attempt 'Sons and Lovers'. Maybe.

Meanwhile I have Devon covered with Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

I have to say this is going a lot faster than my Around the World and Across America challenges. And I'm not even trying! I just naturally read more books set in the UK. Cornwall next, I think, with Daphne du Maurier.

message 13: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments The Sunday Philosophy Club (Isabel Dalhousie, #1) by Alexander McCall Smith was rather dull and disappointing, but it did at least give me my first Scottish county: Midlothian/Edinburghshire.

message 14: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments I've realised I've forgotten to add some books here! In February I re-read Gaudy Night (Lord Peter Wimsey, #12) by Dorothy L. Sayers which is set in Oxford. Slagside by Heidi Sævareid is a Norwegian book, but it is set in Bristol, thus giving me Gloucestershire. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon is set in Swindon, but I already have a book for Wiltshire, so that's my first double-up. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier gives me Cornwall, and so will every other Daphne du Maurier book I might read.

Currently reading Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand which is set in Hampshire. This is going quite well! 11 counties in four months. And I'm not even making a special effort.

message 15: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Two more Daphne du Murier books, both set in Cornwall. That's not getting me anywhere. But I have also, at long last, completed The Canterbury Tales and while they start out in London, they spend most of the book riding through Kent. Is this cheating? I mean, the book is basically a bunch of stories, none of which are set in Kent, but the characters telling the stories are. I'm counting it for Kent.

message 16: by Tania (new)

Tania | 980 comments I would give it to you for just the achievement of it. lol

message 17: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Hah. Thank you. I admit it felt like a never ending chore! I did read a Modern English translation, not the original Middle English, and it was still hard going. I used Serial Reader so I only had to spend 15 minutes or so per day, but it took 64 days!

message 18: by Tania (new)

Tania | 980 comments There a lot you can do with 64 days like find another book. I suppose it goes under the heading of War and Peace being able to say you have the t-shirt and read the book.

message 19: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Well, yes. At a count I read 30 other books (including quite a few graphic novels) in the same time period. If I had to limit myself to just the Canterbury Tales I would have quit. LOL

message 20: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments I didn't add much to this in the second half of the year. Kept reading the same few counties, or books set either all over the place or in undisclosed and indeterminable English locations.

So after the first year I have 20 in total, all but one set in England and none at all in Wales. I might have to make more of a concentrated effort in 2018. Time to raid the local library. They do have a whole shelf section dedicated to books set in Wales. I have really no excuse!

message 21: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments First county of the year: Northumberland - The Heiress of Linn Hagh (Detective Lavender Mysteries, #1) by Karen Charlton

message 22: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Cheshire - Wives and Daughters

message 23: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Got my first Welsh book read at last. Funny how I intended to focus on Wales first and then just read a bunch of books set in England. But anyway, for Cardiganshire/Ceredigion I have Aberystwyth Mon Amour (Aberystwyth Noir, #1) by Malcolm Pryce

message 24: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Warwickshire - Silas Marner by George Eliot
Not my favourite George Eliot, but it was quick. And had a happy ending, which is hardly a guarantee with GE.

message 25: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments This is going to take me the rest of my life. I keep reading books set in either London or in unidentifiable parts of the English "countryside".

But I've managed Lanarkshire (Glasgow) with the very entertaining Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

message 26: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 354 comments Fife - The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

That was... disturbing but fascinating.
