What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Roughly published 1980 - 1985 or so ... from what I can remember. The girl is about 14 years old and the story is told in the first person. Her father is an archaeologist and he’s killed on a dig … the structure collapses in on him. Those hired for the dig, leave the girl behind.

The story is about how she survives and eventually gets to a city or home or something …. I think the setting is somewhere in South America - possibly the Amazon but I don't remember. I DO remember she meets a boy out to earn/prove his adulthood and he teaches her the ways of the jungle to find food and stay safe. I’m not sure he stays w her in the whole novel.

Loved the book and have exhausted tons of other search resources!

Ah no! But thank you. I don't remember this as being YA either. And the father was definitely killed in that first chapter.

Kym - holy cow this is it! I was so sure it wasn't a YA ... the first publication date is 1979 so that fits ... and on Amazon, they have a few pages .. one of which I distinctly remember being so vivid. Thank you!!!!! Seriously years of searching for this and I appreciate it!
