I want to say that the book was originally written in German, French or maybe Norwegian but I read the English edition. It's, as the post title says, about one or two people investigating a bizarre death by looking at, I believe, film rolls taken from the last images recorded on the victim's eyes. The story ties in with an earlier timeline (maybe in the 70s?) where a bunch of girls at an orphanage were exposed to some sort of experimentation that made them crazy and violent. The investigators find a film under the original film and are able to clean it up to see a silent recording of this older experiment where the girls were triggered and tore apart a bunch of rabbits (and then possibly each other?). I know it's a long shot, but has anyone read this?

I have a vague feeling that I have read this, but no idea which book it might be. Could it be anything by Sebastian Fitzek? I believe some of his books have been translated.
No, unfortunately not. I wish I could remember the author's name...I feel like both the name and title are right on the edge of my mind. I can almost picture them but not quite. It's so frustrating when that happens!
I don't remember a lot about this book, but I think there are similarities Syndrome E. Originally published in French.
Indeed! Do you perhaps remember if the author was male or female? When did you read it, and was it a new book then?
YES. Thank you, Shanna, Syndrome E is the one! I knew it was something like that; I was just completely blanking out. I kept wanting to say "experiment" instead of "syndrome" but I knew that was wrong.
