James Joyce Reading Group discussion

Hi everyone! I have the wordsworth edition. I was wondering if that is a good choice? If not, which one would you recommend?

Hi Lany - The two best editions of ULYSSES are the 1961 Random House or any facsimile of it; or, equally good and maybe easier to obtain is the 2009 Dover Publications edition which is a facsimile of the original 1922 Shakespeare & Co. edition. Hope this helps. - )

i think the gabler edition, which went after handling a mountain of corrections that joyce eventually gave up on, is my favorite.

i have the facsimile of the original hand-written text, along with the first edition with joyce's corrections, the random house edition, and the gabler text. the publication of ULYSSES and its subsequent history of printing is fascinating. if for no other reason, just reading the forward and introduction of the gabler text will tell a great deal of the story of how the text has been corrupted over the decades, and how the team hans walter gabler assembled went about trying to be as faithful to joyce notebooks on the corrections as possible.

do yourself a favor and check it out.

For the writing and rewriting tale of Ulysses in its full complexity, read Michael Groden's 1977 book Ulysses in Progress: very strongly recommended.

I think there are two considerations to make. One is whether or not this is going to be your first and only read through Ulysses. If so, I'd recommend getting the Gabler edition. Otherwise, the 1922 edition, which Oxford also has a copy of, is a great place to start.

Generally, Joyceans use the Gabler Corrected Text. I've the Random House edition, as well, just "everyone" goes by the pagnation following the Gabler text, mostly.
