Old Yeller. Black Beauty. Garfield and Odie! Literature is full of characters that aren't quite humanoid but have a lot of heart. What are some of your favourite fictional animals?

message 2: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I love Garfield and Oldie. I also liked Wilbur from Charlotte's Web, Snoopy and Woodstock from the Peanuts comics, and that's all I can think of.

Nice choices, everyone!

I have to admit, my personal favourite is Wellington Womble. I've always related to him - being a bookish loner, and all. ;)

Eeyore comes a close second!

Susan (suzybop) | 90 comments My favourite bedtime stories as a child were 101 Dalmations and Lady and the Tramp. I loved the Tramp so much. Moving on Black Beauty was a real hero. My absolute favorite though is Gromit (dog from Wallace and Gromit).

Eyeore.

The Psammead - it looks more like an animal than a fairy in the illustrations and I always thought of it as a kind of exotic mole - lol

Ratty and Mole in The Wind in the Willows

Boxer in Animal Farm

Peter Rabbit and the Flopsy Bunnies

I almost forgot the animals who made me fall in love with animal stories- Ralph S Mouse from Mouse and the Motorcycle and Bunnicla, Chester, Howie and Harold from Bunnicla series. I love how Chester reads and reads and reads, and references the books he reads in the narrative. It's a great way to get younger kids interested in other books as well as hilarious when he misunderstands things.

"Why isn't this steak working?!"
"Maybe it needs to be New York strip instead of T Bone?"
