Most people started reading the book with complete confusion, because the title, Divergent, does not really give anything away. Soon they discovered that Divergent by Veronica Roth is book filled with adventure, suspense, laughter, and even some romance. The novel is centered on Beatrice Prior, a young teenage girl who explores her identity within a society that defines its citizens by their social and personal affiliation with 5 different factions. The first faction, the Erudite, surrounds itself with knowledge, believing that ignorance is the biggest issue in society. The members of the Dauntless faction are bold and reckless, blaming humankind’s downfall on weakness. People from Amity are passive, turning towards mind-numbing peace over conflict. The Candor faction is brutally truthful, claiming that deception ruins the world. Lastly, the Abnegation faction follows a dull but strict lifestyle of selflessness. They are supposed to represent intelligence, bravery, peace, honesty, and selflessness. Problems start occurring when the leaders of some of the factions want to change how things have been for years, and do not really remember the purpose of the factions in the first place. When a child has completed their required amount of schooling, they are then forced to choose to stay with their born faction, or to pick a new faction and leave their old life behind entirely. Faction before blood. But first they must take an aptitude test, to help them decide which faction they should pick. Beatrice is from Abnegation, but believes that she is too selfish to be there. Beatrice’s results come up inconclusive, and she is told that she is Divergent, and that she cannot tell anyone about her results. She does not know of the immense power she holds until her final decision puts her own life in danger and begins to tear apart the very foundations of the community, for better or worse. When everything starts to crumble, the old secrets waiting in the roots of society unravel faster than anyone can keep up with. Her decision will transform her life forever. This book deserves an A+ review because it keeps the reader continuously guessing what will happen next, and it is impossible to put it down. The amount of plot twists keeps the reader interested, and the humorous phrases Roth uses keeps the mood light. I would personally recommend this book to anyone who has not read it, and I would also recommend reading it before you see the movie. Books are always better than the movies.
