Ankou yawned as he retreated to his office, lightly pushing the door shut behind him. He had just finished his final class of the day, and while he loved his job and his students, he was really not looking forward to grading all the assignments. With a slight huff he pulled off his jacket and draped it neatly over the back of his chair, curiously eyeing the flowers in the middle of the table. Sinking into his chair, he picked up the flowers, smiling slightly at the smell. Roses? Who liked him enough to give him roses? He was smiling slightly as he set them back down, picking up the letter instead. He instantly recognized the handwriting of the letter, his smile growing as he read it. Still, Thanatos hadn't signed it. He was used to his friend's shyness, however, and didn't think much of the lack of signature. But the letter was touching, and he read it over again a couple times, absently sniffing the flowers again.
Thanatos had been watching Ankou's office from around the corner, waiting for him to go in and see what he left him. When he finally saw him enter, he counted out what he thought would be a good gap of time to go in after him. As shy as he was, he didn't have the courage to admit he wrote the letter and gave him the flowers, so when he walked in and saw the flowers and Ankou reading the note with a smile, he blushed when he saw how much he liked it. If he had more confidence, he might have admitted right then that he had written it, but instead he stammered out, "O-oh, what pretty flowers. Wh-who sent them?" he was terrible at lying, and his face really gave everything away as he looked at Ankou hopefully, needing to know that what he got really was good enough for him.
Ankou looked up as the author himself walked in, smiling slightly at the other god. "Hello, Thanatos." He greeted, waving to the chair across from his desk in an invitation. He studied other death god, but since he didn't want to make him nervous, Ankou wasn't going to call him out on it. "It isn't signed. The flowers are beautiful, of course, but the note is what is very touching. I wish I knew who had sent it. I would like to thank them in person, and tell them how much I appreciate this gesture. It isn't necessary - I don't look for gratitude for being nice, I just am - but it is still very touching." He smiled as he looked back at him somewhat pointedly. "I am glad I have made such a difference to this person. No one deserves to feel alone."
Thanatos' face lit up a bit when Ankou said that he liked the flowers and note. He tried not to show that he was happy to make Ankou happy, but the slight blush on his cheeks and the way his lips pulled up into a rare smile would be a dead giveaway to Ankou, who knew him so well. "I am glad that I-th-this person," he hurriedly corrected himself, blushing even darker, "Was able to show you how much you mean to m-er them. I'm sure there's a reason it's not signed, perhaps the person is just too shy and couldn't say it in person?" he offered softly, ducking his head after a few moments to fiddle with his fingers. He was starting to realize just how much of a crush he'd developed on Ankou sitting in the room with him now, but how could he ever tell someone as wonderful and amazing as Ankou about his feelings? He was just an easily forgettable greek god not many could recall. They usually assumed that Hades did his job, so why would Ankou want someone forgettable?
Ankou smiled as he turned the note over in his hand absently, still looking at Thanatos. "It's fine that they're shy. That doesn't bother me. I just wish that I would be able to tell them how much I appreciate this." He smiled slightly, looking over at Thanatos. "I don't look for gratitude when I help people, of course. It is a nice surprise to receive it." He explained, carefully arranging the flowers in a vase on his desk. To a certain extent, he was proud of Thanatos for sending the letter. Even if the other death god hadn't been able to bring himself to sign it, it was still bold for someone like him. Ankou already knew that he was going to treasure that note for the rest of his existence. "Would you like to sit with me for a while?" He offered, pointing at the chair across from his desk in invitation. "I always love your company."
Thanatos could feel his heart flutter as Anjou smiled as he turned the note over in his hands, not really understanding it but did it really matter? He felt happier than he had in a long time. Even if he didn't really completely understand the emotions he was feeling, they made him feel less depressed. That was good enough for him, for now. "I um...." he murmured something softly, so softly you wouldn't really be able to hear it, blushing madly before nodding at Ankou's invitation to stay and moving to sit, peeking up at him with a soft smile. "I-I enjoy your company too." he said after gathering up his courage.
"Well that's good. I wouldn't want to make you spend time with me if you didn't like me." Ankou chuckled slightly, leaning back comfortably in his chair. "How is the library? I always try and tell my students to be careful of the books if they have to go. One of my students said one of the other teachers helped you fix books a while ago, I'm glad you're getting more comfortable around other people."
Thanatos flushed and quickly stammered to correct himself when Ankou said that, only realizing several moments later that Ankou was teasing. He had a hard time with things like teasing or sarcasm as he took everything literally most of the time. "Ah, as for the library, it has been nice. It is quiet and soothing to be there. I know the students do their best to be careful, but I don't mind repairing those that get damaged. The one who helped me, Seth, was quiet like me, it was nice." He almost mentioned how Seth helped him decide on the flowers and note, and flushed as he realized just what he'd be admitting and quieted.
Ankou smiled over at him, raising an eyebrow. Opening a drawer in his desk, he pulled out a ball, sliding the drawer shut after it. He leaned back in the chair, tossing the ball up in the air and catching it before repeating the process. "I'm glad you have someone else you can get along with. And Seth; if my students' rumors are anything to go by I don't think he has anyone either." He explained, looking over at him. "I'll start coming by the library more, I've just been swamped since I have a big test scheduled for them soon so students keep coming to me for help with questions and all."
Thanatos smiled a little and said, "Ah...y-yes. I-it is nice to speak to someone else..." his voice was soft as he looked down at his fingers as he folded them together. He wondered on Seth for a moment when Ankou mentioned that Seth didn't have anyone either, then said, "well..I do have you, don't I? Though I suppose he doesn't have anyone like I do...I'm glad I could be of what little help I was for him in terms of companionship." His head tipped up to look at Ankou when he mentioned visiting more and smiled. "I-I am happy to hear that. I um...w-well..." he flushed and mumbled out, "I've missed you."
