T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments An age old question even though does not seem to come up much these days. Should authors, or any other writer come to that, use one or two spaces between sentences. In some respects this is traditional verses innovative (perhaps indie would be a more recognisable term). Sound familiar? Here some thoughts on the subject: https://trrobinsonpublications.com/20...

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments WHICH INDEPENDENT AUTHOR HAS NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE CHALLENGE OF GETTING THEIR BOOK(S) INTO A BOOK STORE?!

Any self-published author who has tried will affirm how difficult it is to get a self-published book into a bricks and mortar book store. Why? The following is a conglomeration of information, ideas and thoughts obtained from a variety of sites and places.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments All authors face the challenge of not only writing their books but also of making them technically as accurate as possible.

PROOF READING YOUR OWN WORK

The principal aim in proofreading is to check for spelling; punctuation; formatting and general grammar errors.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments Many independent authors do not have the wherewithal to hire a professional editor and must therefore look to undertaking the task themselves.

Editing Your Own Work

In editing the intention is to ensure the resulting publication is cohesive; consistent; relevant; correct. These principles apply to all publications whether technical, factual or fictional. (Note: Editing is a completely different process to proofreading. It is important not to mix the two up.)

Unless an appropriate tax form has been correctly completed and submitted non-use authors will be subject to a 30% tax withholding. Not something any of us would be pleased about no matter how many, or few, books we sell. This article covers the topic as well as reviewing this excellent book.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments READERS SELECTION PROCESSES

Authors, especially indie (independent) ones, need some comprehension of how readers select a book. Publicity and marketing for all authors, no matter how published, is a challenge, especially in these days when hundreds of thousands of books are being independently published. Consequently, any information that may help target readers is invaluable.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments WHO DO AUTHORS WRITE FOR?

It would seem many authors and writers (authors to the extent they are authoring a product) forget they are not generally writing for themselves. Having said that, it has to be acknowledged there are a variety of different takes on the topic e.g. some feel it is only correct to write what they want without consideration of others; others say writing should be entirely geared toward the anticipated audience even compromising upon content to satisfy them; others suggest an amalgam of styles. Of course, in varying circumstances any of these, or a combination, may be appropriate. Nevertheless, this post is intended to be pragmatic and realistic.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO MARKETING

Whether liked or not, the writing and publishing of a book are simply the first steps in an author’s career. They may well groan and consider after having spent endless hours pondering, structuring, creating and getting their masterpiece published, they have done their job, completed their task. But the truth of the matter is they have not.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments ONE OR TWO SPACES?

Though the debate regarding whether it is correct to enter one or two spaces after a full stop/period appears to have abated, it remains a relevant topic. Perhaps even more so because an increasing amount of retired people have taken to public writing. Also, as explained further down, the subject has an impact upon the readability of books, both physical and digital. Authors need to be fully aware of this.

Now reading more e-books on a regular basis, I cannot help but notice how many more liberties in grammar and punctuation are taken in the publishing of e-books.

My own may be published in soft cover with all of the spacing, punctuation marks, etc., in place, but when it comes out in electronic book format much of that has gone out the window.

Valid observation MaryJo. Social Media and other online activities have certainly changed perceptions. Can be frustrating at times but we have to accept it is all part of modern society, like it or not.

T.R. Robinson (t_r_robinson) | 89 comments WHY MEMOIRS?

Some may consider a memoir/autobiography author to be arrogant: Why else would they think anyone would be interested in their story? The truth is most authors, no matter the genre they write in, are shy, introverted people who seek to avoid public exposure. The very thought causes them to cringe. Nevertheless, in the case of memoir, most consider their tale is one that needs to be told. Why? What are the reasons these normally shy and withdrawn people chose to write a memoir?

Metadata is pivotal to discoverability (find, come across, locate, stumble upon, bring to light). Without it readers/consumers are unlikely to come across the book or product when carrying out a search.
