Since I recently started a thread highlighting our own Shane Joseph's excellent short fiction collection, Paradise Revisited, I'd be remiss if I didn't also recommend his equally fine novel, In the Shadow of the Conquistador. On the whole, I read more genre and speculative fiction than I do general descriptive fiction in a contemporary setting. But I'm open to read a lot more of the latter if it's as perceptive, constructive and well-crafted as this novel! My five-star review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... .

"Conquistador" is getting renewed interest in the light of the current news about "grabbing", "ranting" and "cheating" going on among political leaders and which is sanctioned as "acceptable" in today's morality. My character George might even have been elected had he run for office today. It's clear that nothing much has changed in human nature, when confronted with power and greed, from the time of Pizarro. Perhaps it's only the technology that has changed.
