To answer the starter question no I have not seen the movie or the play before but I was aware, roughly, what the Phantom of the Opera was. While reading the book I found that it was much more melodramatic than I anticipated honestly. I think I was expecting some much more dark and brooding and it wasn't that. Overall I thought it was a well written book and I appreciated the way that the Opera House just felt alive with all these secrets and locations. My only criticism, and this is a personal thing, I felt it got a little to melodramatic at times. I was getting annoyed with the women screaming and fainting when ever they caught a glimpse of the Opera Ghost but I could kind of excuse it as a thing from that time. Then the men started fainting because they caught a glimpse of the Opera Ghost and it was just to much. I wanted someone in this book to be made from sterner stuff and I just don't feel that I got that.

Starter question: Have you seen the musical or movie before reading this book? How did it compare?
