Then she took out a lump of clay and broke it in half, tipped a bit of water over it and then handed half to Lilly.
‘Make your favourite animal or mystical creature,’ she told her.
As they were both artists, this was an easy task.
Lilly made a unicorn and Rose made an elephant. They put them down in the middle of the circle.
Rose got some fresh flower petals and sprinkled them over the clay figures, then added more water, so the clay glimmered in the candlelight.
Sitting opposite each other, Rose spoke out the words of the chant and clapped her hands six times.
‘I will go first,’ she said. ‘Truth or dare, Lilly?’
‘Truth, please.’
‘Who did you love the most, Buster or Shawn?’
‘That’s easy,’ said Lilly. ‘Buster.’
Just then, sparks flew up from the clay object and a horn grew out of Lilly’s head.
‘Argh! What’s happing?’ Lilly screamed at her mum while rushing over to look in the mirror.
‘You said a lie, so you got the first part of your magical being,’ Rose said smugly.
Lilly looked at the clay figure and saw there was no horn on it.
‘But I did not lie!’ Lilly protested. ‘I love Buster the most.’
‘Maybe you think that, but your heart is saying something different,’ Rose replied. ‘Don’t worry, the game is not over. You have more chances to win!’
‘My turn,’ said Lilly, in a slightly cross, but excited, tone.
‘So, mum, truth or dare?’
Rose did not like the tone in Lilly’s voice, so she said, ‘Dare.’
‘I dare you to ring Nick, and say you have been madly in love with him for a long time and you would simply love to go on a date with him!’
‘Lilly! No!‘
Just then, Rose’s right leg started to swell up and then it turned into an elephant foot.
Lilly fell backwards laughing.
‘I love this game! It’s wicked!’ she giggled.
Rose composed herself, ready to ask Lilly the next truth or dare question, but there was a knock at the door. She and Lilly screamed.
‘Argh! We can’t answer the door like this,’ Rose said.
‘Why not?’ said Lilly. ‘You could hide your foot and I could wrap a towel around my head.’
Rose giggled. She pulled herself up and dragged herself over towards the front door.
Lilly ran into the kitchen and got a large towel out of the airing cupboard, wrapped it around her head and then ran to stand by the door with her mum.
Rose opened the door slightly to see Nick standing there.
‘Hello, Rose,’ said Nick. ‘I was slightly worried you were not in.’
Rose smiled at him. She had her elephant foot hidden behind the door. Lilly stood behind her with a large towel around her head.
Nick handed Rose a small bunch of flowers and said, ‘I was wondering if I might come in? I have something I would like to ask you.’
Rose looked slightly worried and said, ‘Umm, this is not a good time, Nick. I’m sorry, but we’re having a girly evening.’
‘Mum is doing my hair,’ Lilly said, pointing to the large towel.
Rose said, ‘I will give you a call another time, Nick. I’m sure your number’s in the book. Thank you for the flowers.’
Nick looked disappointed.
‘Yes, my number’s in the book. Call anytime, Rose.’
Rose smiled at Nick and said, ‘bye,’ closing the door.
Rose and Lilly let out roars of laughter, and sat back on the floor in the front room.
Rose smiled at Lilly and asked, ‘So, Lilly, truth or dare?’
‘Dare! Dare!’ cried Lilly.
‘Lick your elbow,’ Rose laughingly said to her.
Lilly tried. ‘Oh, that’s impossible!’ she said, laughing.
‘Although I can get my tongue up my nose,’ she countered, pushing her tongue out and up to her nose.
‘Eugh,’ said Rose, as she watched Lilly.
Just then, Lilly felt something very odd happening.
‘Wow,’ she cried as a beautiful white tail flowed from behind her.
Lilly span around to admire it.
‘Oh,’ she said happily. ‘I have always secretly wanted a tail! Can I keep it?’ she asked, smiling.
‘No!’ said Rose. ‘How would you explain a tail!?’
‘Truth or dare, Mum?’ Lilly asked.
‘Truth,’ said Rose.
Lilly thought and said, ‘If you woke up tomorrow and you found that you had become a man, what would be the first thing you would do?’
‘Panic,’ cried Rose. ‘Oh, what a terrible fate that would be!’
Rose leaned back, resting her elephant foot out in front of her and scratching the rough skin.
‘A man,’ Rose repeated. ‘Hmm… Would I be good looking?’
‘Of course.’
‘Then I think I might buy some flowers and go around to all my single female friends, give them a flower each and tell them how beautiful they are.’
‘Aww, that’s nice, Mum.’
‘Your turn, Lilly. Truth or dare?’
‘Dare,’ said Lilly.
‘Before I say this, Lilly, just to warn you, this is your last chance. If you fail this, then you will turn into a unicorn, my foot will change back and the game’s over.’
‘I don’t mind turning into a unicorn one bit, so bring on the dare, mum!’ Lilly said triumphantly.
‘Write a letter to someone you secretly hate or love and post it.’
‘I know I could never do that,’ Lilly said.
Sparkles appeared around Lilly and she transformed into a beautiful white unicorn. She trotted around the room, and Mandy shot out of the way and cowered under the small table peering out at her.
Lilly let out a loud neighing noise and snorted though her nose, tapping one of her hooves on the floorboards. Within seconds though, she was back again in her human form giggling naked on the floor. Rose threw a blanket on her.
‘As I’m naked, I may as well go and have a bath,’ Lilly said, walking into the small bathroom that was on the same floor next to the hallway.
Rose smiled, started to clean up and put the kettle on for more tea whilst Lilly started to run the bath.
As Lilly lay in the bath, she pretended to be a mermaid. She thought about Katie and Misty and wondered if she would ever meet them again. They were so beautiful and Lilly had a lot to thank them both for because they had saved Maggie and Shawn.
‘Oh, Shawn,’ Lilly sighed. How she missed him and Jack too; even though she had been surprised by her answer to the question of whether she loved Buster or Shawn the most.
Lilly got out of the bath when the water turned cold and went to sit by the fire with her mum.
‘Mum, talking of truth or dares, I have some truth I want to tell you,’ Lilly said.
Rose started to say some words in Latin.
Then she took out a lump of clay and broke it in half, tipped a bit of water over it and then handed half to Lilly.
‘Make your favourite animal or mystical creature,’ she told her.
