Quantum (quantumkatana) | 4 comments Any recommendations for a dictionary of Japanese personal/first/given names. Not a "baby" names book, but a well-researched dictionary with etymologies, where possible.

It should be something like this one that I just bought.

Oxford Dictionary of First Names by Patrick Hanks

I would like a dictionary that is only in Japanese. I'll apply myself. But I'd also like one that is a translation of Japanese names to English.

Thanks in advance!

Christian (comeauch) | 230 comments https://myoji-yurai.net has some information on many names, including etymology sometimes.

I could find a couple of hits on Amazon.co.jp, but it's not like I had actually used any of them so... hopefully someone else can be more useful! Anyway I've noticed this one because a reviewer said he'd recommend it for naming characters :P Some look more "fun"-oriented, like this, but you'll notice there's way less names (but more details for each).

I've tried a couple of names on the website I linked to, but most of their history is : some emperor named his 305th kid like that. Etymology is often related to the place or profession (like Western names). I guess things can get more funky with first names, but the meaning would depend on what the parents had in mind...
