For Angola, The Land at the End of the World by António Lobo Antunes has been on my radar for a while, and looks like it would have great insights into the war. That said, one of Ondjaki's books, such as Good Morning Comrades or Granma Nineteen and the Soviet's Secret or The Whistler, looks likes a good choice for a book that is entertaining and not so heavy.
