I loved to read as a child, but my god, I hated reading some of the books my English teachers assigned to the class. The ironic thing is that I would have enjoyed the assigned reading if I had just read them on my own instead of "popcorn reading" and poring over the symbolism for half of a semester.

Classics like The Scarlett Letter, The Jungle, and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest are salted earth to me now, and they're all great pieces of literature!

Though, there were also assigned books I did love. I enjoyed reading The Kite Runner, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and Night.

So, I'm curious. What are some of your favorite and least favorite books you read for class?

Frankie Victoria | 1 comments Some favorites: To Kill A Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Giovanni's Room

I too disliked The Scarlett Letter, but the only book I really hated after reading it for a class was Elie Weisel's Night.

Danielle T (daumari) | 15 comments I recall reading Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol in 7th grade, except the English teacher just gave us quiet reading time. I'm a fast reader, so I read ahead days earlier and figured I'd read my other book for fun (The Bear and the Dragon if I recall). Teach saw me reading the other book and was like "wtf no, do the assigned reading" and I was like "FINE I will re-read this"

It really depended on the class, though- I recall doing short stories later in AP Lit as popcorn reading, and everyone tried to do voices for different characters which was fun.

It was "The Great Gatsby" for me, it was assigned at a time I happened to be super burnt out so I BS'ed my way around all the assignments and never really got back to it.

Yadira Mejia (yim25) | 1 comments I read the Great Gatsby around the same time the movie came out and I remember hating everyone in the book while everyone in my class was dressing up and obsessing over it. I think going over the symbolism in class made my dislike of the characters worse, but I think that was sort of the point so I guess it was a good lesson.

In college I had to read Battleborn, and the whole class was based on the book, I skimmed through it and now have two copies I refuse to read because of how awful the class was. Not sure if the book is any better but I assume there's a reason a whole class was made for it.
