October is National Bullying Prevention Month

Every October, schools and organizations across the country join STOMP Out Bullying™ in observing National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal: encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages.

I know it’s only the middle of April, but if your PTA and/or elementary school staff is planning an effort now to address bullying (or has an ongoing, aggressive program in that area, as almost every school district does these days), I want to alert you to my recently published illustrated children’s storybook (in verse), Pepe Builds a Next. The book addresses the issues of bullying, theft, friendship, and forgiveness in ways every child can understand and appreciate.

I recently discussed the book with the 40 students and their teachers at the Newtown (PA) Friends Elementary School.



The children were absolutely amazing! Their grasp of the concepts and how to resolve problems related to bullying was impressive, as was their understanding of the concepts of working together and forgiveness.

Bullying, and its more recent form, cyberbully, are two of the more virulent forms of abuse facing our young people today. Anything and everything we can do to address these problems is a major step for everyone concerned.

Very important work. Here in the UK we have had teenage suicides because of bullying and cyber bullying.

Not unknown in the US (and other areas of the world) as well. Very sad state of affairs, to be sure.
