I respect that opinion. On the other hand, whenever i come to think i dislike him i keep thinking my judging him is a tad anachronistic? He provides for Maude, despite his dislike for her politics...

I agree. I did like him at the start despite the fact he's very conservative, but it became steadily more difficult to like him as the book went on. He's even worse in the second book
I did feel like Fitz's obsession with traditionalism prevented him from making any sort of compromise when it came to life. If he would have eventually came around to supporting Maud and Walter's marriage, he would have grown on me some more. Then there were other traditional oopsies like what to do about Ethel and Lloyd. He handled things way too "Oh, what would the public think?" manner rather than doing what was right.
