Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments How is it almost May already?

May is Nay's choice. She'd like everyone to "try again".

...try, try again: book you started but never finished

Tessa | 1761 comments Mine is Avoiding Commitment by KA Linde

message 4: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellesantiago) | 299 comments I'm thinking mine should be Fish Tales, The Man I Love. After reading Larks, by same author, I am excited to give it another try. Some said it was even better!

message 5: by Ela (new)

Ela | 4291 comments IMine originally was Wolfsong but I read it during a different month so I wouldn't mind budding up with Fish Tales

I'm the same as Michelle, I'm going with Fish Tales The Main I love, too...

Good choice!

message 11: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments ROFL I'm like 30% in from last I checked. I just love her writing so I have to give it another chance.

message 12: by Anna (new)

Anna Penwick (annapenwick) | 166 comments I'm not sure what to pick for this one. I may bend this theme a little and chose a second chance romance instead of going back to a dnf.

message 13: by Robin (new)

Robin Hill (robinhill) | 1528 comments I'm leaning toward The Debt. Only because I'd made it to 60% and I don't have far to go to add to my year end challenge!

message 14: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments I am going to finish Thoughtless

message 15: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments I'm going to bend the theme like Anna. If I dnf'd a book, I dont want to read it. :(

So I figured I'd try an author again. You all seem to love Tijan. I did not love Fallen Crest (sorry). But will give Carter Reed Carter Reed (Carter Reed, #1) by Tijan a try.

message 16: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Honestly, your taste don't really run to Tijan's work. :) This is the most adult of all of them, though. And goodness knows, Carter was easy to love.

message 17: by Robin (new)

Robin Hill (robinhill) | 1528 comments Yes Leslie!! I LOVE that idea! It won't help my TBR but it may change my opinion of an author. I'm switching to Spiralling Skywards: Falling by Lesley Jones. I HATED Carnage, but I loved the writing and the storytelling. My issue was with the plot. Yay!! I'm so excited now!

message 18: by Nay (last edited Apr 23, 2017 12:31AM) (new)

Nay (4ukcats) Oooh, I love the various ways of thinking about a book to read for this!

Really and truly, when I came up with the 'try, try again' theme, I wasn't thinking of a book that you dnf'd because you didn't like it--because who wants to go back and try to read a book that you originally stopped because you hated it?

What I had more in mind was a book that you're reading that you know you're going to finish, but you're just not in the mood for it right now, so you'll come back to it. Or a book that you're reading when a new release that you HAVE to read RIGHT NOW comes out, so you stop reading it because you'll 'go back to it as soon as you finish the hot new release', but then you go on to something else and kinda forget about it, so it's still sitting there on your 'currently reading' shelf.

So anyway, that's another interpretation of the the theme if anyone wants to think of it that way or has any books like that.

I know that five years ago, I never would have put a book down to start another nor would I have dnf'd a book, but I've majorly relaxed my 'rules' since then, so I have about 5 books hanging out there that I want to finish, but I just never have for whatever reason. Now I just have to pick one of them for the challenge!

message 19: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Nay, I think your idea was awesome! I got what you meant....but unfortunately I never do "go back laters". I'm a "finish it before starting new book" or "dnf, never to go back to again" kind of a gal. Hee hee

But I think this "try again" could also be interpreted by genre, right? Thats another option.

Robin, I am glad my pick gave you an idea.

message 20: by Robin (new)

Robin Hill (robinhill) | 1528 comments Nay I love this idea too. Your idea is why so many people are giving The Man I Love some love and I'm more excited about that than anything!!! I'm just like Leslie though. Once I give up, I'm pretty much done. Except for Stephen King. I've tried IT four times and I know one day I'll go back to The Shining, but that time is not now. I need to be hooked or I won't pick it up right now.

message 21: by Amy (new)

Amy (amy_nm) | 140 comments Hmmmm...now I'm rethinking my choice. I'm going to have to take a peek at my most hated books and see if the author(s) have other books I might try.

You guys are brilliant. ;)

message 22: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) Oh wow--it's May! So I guess I should mention what my May book is going to be, especially since I picked the month's theme! lol

After picking this up and putting it down more times than I can count, I am finally going to try one last time and FINISH:

Seducing Destiny Seducing Destiny (The Fae Chronicles, #4) by Amelia Hutchins

YOU BETTER FINISH AND LOVE IT OR ELSE WE CAN'T BE FRIENDS ANYMORE!

message 24: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments No pressure or anything...

Though, it's kind of the worst of the bunch. Just read it so you can go Play with Monsters!

Is #4 of the Fae Chronicles a requirement before Playing with Monsters? Have I asked this question before?

Maybe that's why I haven't read PwM. I only got through the first 3 FCs.

No... It really isnt. I mean it mentions a couple things in passing, but this is the start of a whole new series! Like an amazing new series!!! My number one book last year!

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments I added to my reading schedule. June 21st. yeah, that's how far out it's gotten. Yikes. Never thought I'd say this, but I need some dnfs. lol!

It may not be for everyone, but as I read (I got to 60% in PWM), I kept feeling like I was missing something. Something about the hero's (can't remember his name--sorry!) personality and some event(s) that were mentioned. I don't think they were anything earth-shattering, but for ME, personally, I felt like I didn't know HIM or something about the story well enough, so I quit reading and decided I was going to finish Seducing Destiny first.

And it's not that SD isn't good. I'm just finding the book putdownable because (view spoiler)

They're already a couple and they have babies?! :-O Tell me it isn't so.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Oh, you meant SD, not PwM

No! Not at all, Fabi. Nothing was said about that here--just move along...

*facepalm* I'm sorry! I forgot that not everyone in the world has read the first three books like I have, and when I saw it was mentioned in the blurb, I just thought it was ok to say! I added a spoiler tag.

Sheesh, I'm such an idioto!! (my word for the singular, most major idiot E-V-E-R--comes from the same dictionary as 'ridiculi')

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments No, Nay. I've actually read the first 3. Although it was a long time ago and couldn't for the life of me tell you what they were about. I haven't read #4.

My question is, were you referring to #4 or were you referring to Playing with Monsters?

message 36: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellesantiago) | 299 comments Playing With Monsters was only a 3 star read for me. Didn't have the Fae Chronicles magic of that first book!

message 37: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Proof we are different. I liked them both but for different reasons. I loved the darkness that was added in PwM. Fae Chronicles does get dark, don't get me wrong, but PwM has that "bully" thing that had me going crazy.

message 38: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) Fabi--I was referrring to #4, but I just realized that it wasn't specifically Seducing Destiny that I wanted to read first (I think Lucian has one little mention in SD)--it's A Demon's Dark Embrace, which is Ristan's story and is another spinoff (why is AH doing more than one spinoff???)

So anyway, when I felt like I was missing something, I started looking at the reviews for Playing With Monsters, and I found this snippet:
"We were introduced to Lucian in yet another spin off book from the fae chronicles...A Demons Dark Embrace. And honestly, if you want to know more about Magdalena and her secrets, you should read that book because it actually gives a much better explanation of her coven than this book. It gives you a better look at Lucian too, even with the brief interaction Ristan has with him.

So after I finish Seducing Destiny, I'm reading A Demon's Dark Embrace and then I'll pick Playing with Monsters back up. I'm just anal about reading things in order if I miss anything about how a character is 'shaped' in a previous book.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Im thinking True Love Story. Maybe Making Faces. I was enjoying both just put them down for whatever reason. I have a ton of these in my tbr. I squirrel.

message 40: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Bev, True Love Story reminded me of Thoughtless. So....might not be your cuppa.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Alright, Nay. I'm pretty strict about reading things in order too. I hate it when things are mentioned that I feel like I should know but don't because they were in another book.

I guess I'm putting PwM on the backburner again.

Thanks for all the explanation.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe not, though I already liked what I had started. Plus, (view spoiler)
And I remember the writing being better.
Though you know I like the Storm one and its Tru's POV....

message 43: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) I'm sposed to be doing The Man I Love, but as yet I just can't bring myself to have another go. Maybe later in the month the mood might strike? At the moment I'm reading my pick-for-me book so we'll see.

Hang on, did I say I'll DO the man I love? *quickly censors self* Ahem. I meant READ The man I Love.....
