As you said, the series is part of the dystopian genre, which is one I have a particular inclination for. I also love the Greek and Roman influences.
It was really refreshing to finally find a female character who has other priorities than pinning over love interests. Katniss is one tough young lady! She does what needs to be done, for the most part, to the best of her abilities wherever she is. She holds herself straight with sheer willpower, even though she's actually sensitive and empathizes too much for her own psychological security.
One of my favourites is Cinna, so you can imagine how much I cried for him. He used his gift for a cause he found just and worthy. Through him, we relearn how the arts, how culture can reach people and be a voice for revolution, which can be easily forgotten in fiction. There's more to revolution than weaponry! You need to call out to and encourage the people, to speak to them in a indirect way, like protest songs.
I don't have a problem with the ending per se. It went full circle: started with Prim, ended with Prim. I may have a problem with the attitude of certain characters at the end, though. I felt Gale and Katniss's mother abandoned her at her lowest, when she'd given and lost it all.
Oh, I could say a lot but then this'd end up being a huge, unorganized essay or something xD

LOVEEEEEEEED the first books, 'meh'ed the second, and HATEEEEEEEEEED the last book.
Great characters, okay plot, good writing... only for books one and two. I recommend, if you like the series so far, don't read the last book... it ruined everything...

I agree, the last book was just so slow and terrible and I did not enjoy it at all and Prim her death was just devastating :(

I have yet to see all the movies but, I will watch them eventually lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated Mockingjay. The writing just turned weird. I did not understand anything. Even Prim's death was a blur. But the second book was my favorite

Glad we agree on Mockingjay... However, the first book was so innocent and dangerous, at the same time, it was hard not to love it...

What did you find interesting in the Second book more than the First?

The revolution starting, old and new characters mixing into the plot and Katniss's love triangle made a lot more sense and started to get in the way.

Okay... I can see that... For me, I disliked the new characters/ old character's new moods... Kind of butchered the Boy with the Bread and Gale...

I also liked what Ilsen said about Catching Fire. As overused as this may be, I love the "there's something so much more going on" trope.

True... Yeah I could see that... O well, BOOK 1 DIE-HARD fan

Ilsen wrote: "Yes I would love to read about Haymitch's Hunger Games!!"I've never actually thought about that. It is a pretty awesome idea! This was a good series and I am glad I spent a weekend reading them.
I was thinking that we could know what Haymitch* was thinking about the girl he teamed up with. WAS HE IN LOVE? IS THAT WHY HE DIDN'T MARRY ANYONE? So many unanswered questions.
As much as I love (uncle) Haymitch, his book would probably hurt too much.
Living in that hell-hole of a district, with people starving, dying and young ones dreading their fate at every Ripping. Then being drawn, teaming up with his district's tribute only to survive as a twist of fate. Survivor's guilt, the traumatizing memories of the game, and all the twisted stuff that happens to Victors, like being sold and used.
Then every game he's forced to mentor these 2 skinny kids looking to him for some sort of wisdom. Hope against hope one of them lives, and have them all die.
It's hard not to turn into some sort of escapism, since he has no release from the memories, the guilt, the despair, the loss of any shred of hope... becoming cynical towards everything.

But wouldn't want to see what he though when Katniss and Peeta was in the first Game for them? What about his love? Did he have one? There are countless questions... and Haymitch would answer many of them...

Well, that would be more than what was previously suggested which was a prequel of sorts about the Games Haymitch won! I don't want to know if he did love someone, it would make his life story even more sad. Having kids was too painful, too selfish before the end of book 3, Haymitch would never act on those feelings if he did have them.
Knowing Haymitch, I pretty much know what he thought about since he saw those 2. He's too much like Katniss, though more cunning.
So I don't see a need for a book. Part of the greatness of the reading experience is filling in the holes yourself as a reader.
I would like to know a bit more about Cinna though. No need for a novella though.

Answers for the holes is LIFE! Everything and everyone needs a novella! :)
