Yamnaa | 12 comments Hey! Im looking for a book which had these women who would dive without any gear or anyyhing for pearls i think. They lived in a village and i remember one scene from it in which this peddlar comes, which these bags or pouches for sale and they hold a competetion to see who gets them based on i think the longest dive or biggest pearl. The main character, a young girl, wins but chooses the more sombre coloured pouch to give to the older woman who is touched

Apart from that as regards the divers themselves think those japanese women who dive for sea snails like its those type of people but im not 100% sure about it being them in this book.
Anyways thats all I remember, thanks in advance!

How many years ago did you read this?
Anything about the cover?
Part of a series?
Was this a book for teens or adults?
Time period/location story takes place?
Is this a fantasy, coming of age, mystery, etc?

Tab's suggestion of The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima matches your description.

Here is the Google Books preview - https://books.google.com/books?id=Bx-... There are different cover images.

"Well, then if we're to have a contest, it ought to be something for the good of Uta-jima Village, to which I owe so much. How about it, everyone - what would you say to an abalone contest? And to the person who brings up the biggest catch in the next hour I'll present the prize." Ceremoniously [the peddler] spread a cloth in the shade of another rock and gravely decked it with the prizes. To tell the truth, not one of the handbags was worth more than about five hundred yen, but they looked worth fully eight hundred... Shinji's mother, who wanted the born, middle-aged bag... Of the eight, Hatsue was the only young girl... Hatsue got to her feet in silence and went around the rock to receive her prize. And the prize she returned with was the brown, middle-aged handbag, which she pressed into the hands of Shinji's mother. The mother's cheeks flushed red with delight. "But ... why? ..."
