Any DC novels, TPB, etc. that you would like to recommend? List them here...

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Superman: Up, up and away
Crisis on multiple earths: the JLA/JSA team ups
Golden Age
Starman by James Robinson
Showcase Presents: almost all of them. Great way to get to read some great, inexpensive silver age goodness.

second the vote on 'Whatever happened to the man of tomorrow'!
and would also add Moore's 'What to get the man who has everything'.

You've hit most of what I'd list(although I personally didn't care for Black Mirror). I'd add
Superman for All Seasons and Kingdom Come.

If we're counting Homage/Veritgo I also highly recommend the Astro City trades.

Jeff | 425 comments I recommend;
Watchmen by Alan Moore
Blackest Night by Geoff Johns
Blackest Night Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Batman The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb
Identity Crisis by Brad Meltzer
The Flash Archives, Vol. 1 by John Broome

You can't go wrong with Infantino drawn Flash stories. He is the Flash artist that all others have to live up to.
Wish I could afford more of the Archives. DC has some great stuff collected.
I tend to get more Showcase Presents as they are cheaper.

Jeff | 425 comments Yeah I love the Showcase Stuff. I loved the Original Showcase comics, They had the best overs especially the first 12 issues.

For a long time when I had my credit cards, I would go and look for these on ebay or conventions and stuff, and they were pretty pricey and was only able to buy a few of them.
I always wanted the first 6 issues, but was only able to get a few of them.

I have a few...
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying - Marv Wolfman
Robin: Year One - Chuck Dixon
The Last Days of Krypton - Kevin J. Anderson

All four Batman - The Animated Series books by Geary Gravel are really good - but especially
Shadows of the Past and
Dual to the Death

I've had the Dark Knight returns high on my wishlist for awhile now. Really need to buckle down and order it. I've heard great things.

I got Superman for All Seasons a few months back and enjoyed it. The artwork was fine except I really detested the work for Superman/Clark Kent. The concept was nice and I love stories that concentrate on Smallville and his roots.

Sale's art takes getting used to, and some characters often don't look right. He's definitely talented though. Batman: The Long Halloween (another book listed a couple times above) is by the same team.

Superman: Secret Identity is an alternate world tale so isn't about the "usual" superman, but it's another great book that examines what real life would be like for someone with superman's powers.

And Dark Knight Returns is a fantastic read. Well worth seeking out.

I hadn't heard of Superman: Secret Identity, I don't believe. Will add it, thanks.

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 60 comments Anyone got some good Flash comics they could recommend? I'm trying to prepare for the Flash TV series coming up this fall.

message 14: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Geoff Johns 'Rogues War' collection is fun.
Almost any of his run with art by Scott Kollins is worth a look.

Or go for the classic Silver Age collections, either Showcase or Chronicles.

message 15: by Mike (new)

Mike | 23 comments Hmm. I remember burning out on Geoff Johns' run eventually, but it was really good for a while and is pretty well regarded. Haven't read the new 52 series but have heard good things. Depending on which version of the Flash they're using that might be a good starting point.

A lot of my favorite Flash stuff were random annuals or his role in other comics, like JLA.

message 16: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Yes, like every Johns run, it goes on too long and you are pretty sick of him by the end, but his early Flash stories, especially what he does with the Rogues, is quite good.

Johns Nu 52 Flash had some nice art, but seemed to be made up of stories that just lead to crossovers.

I've heard a lot of good things about Geoff Johns' runs on the DC comics, so I'll definitely check them out!

message 18: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments Geoff Johns is possibly one f the best comics writer of any of the comics companies out there. His Blackest night storyline is my favorite of all time.

For Flash stories as much as I love the newer stories being written, I'm a throwback to the older Flash comics stories written by Gardner Fox and drawn by Carmine Infantanio.

Do you read comics on a computer or a tablet? If you read on either one of those I have all the comic rack files can send you a few them by email if your interested.

I just requested The Flash: Rebirth from the library and some of the New 52 comics of Flash, so I guess I'll see how they turn out!

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Anything coming out of DC's Young Animals imprint.
All really solid reads.

Young Animals?

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments James wrote: "Young Animals?"

The imprint Gerad Way is doing: Doom Patrol, Shade the changing Girl, Bug!,Cave Carson and Mother Night.

All really good stuff, equal doses of Vertigo surreal and Silver age fun.

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Batman 66/ Legion of super heroes one shot: the most fun read of recent history and it does not want to be more than a fun read.

Man, we need more of these in comics.

message 24: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments So far, the one shots celebrating the 100th birthday of Jack Kirby have been really solid and entertaining.
Good mix of new stories and well chosen reprint back ups.

message 25: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments picked up a stack of pre-Moore Swamp Things comics.

Kind of miss the days when Swamp Thing was just a monster.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Ha, I've never read Swamp Thing but I wouldn't pass one up if they were sitting in front of me. I have a Creature from the Black Lagoon obsession so - yes, it's different - but water monsters are fun.

message 27: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments The Alan Moore run is really good, but I am a big fun of the early 'just a monster' days.
The original run is great and I can also recommend the Marty Pasko 'Saga of the swamp thing' run.

Avoid pretty much every thing after Moore left. It never really recovered after he left.
