message 15: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Can you?

message 16: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments Of course, and so it begins...

Nixon was sitting in class getting the most boring lecture on why Catcher in the Rye was a whole story about a kids angry way of expressing his desire to protect other kids from loosing their innocence. He had read the story and actually liked it, but the presentation was putting him asleep. He dozed off for a minute and then jerked awake realizing he was in class. But wait. Where the heck did everyone go? The classroom was empty. Books were open on the desk and backpacks were on the floor but no one was in the class room. He got up and wandered out into the hall. As he passed class rooms, they were all empty. As if everyone had just gotten up, left everything, and then walked out. Weird he thought.

message 17: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity was in the front office, getting a lecture for disrupting class, again. She just couldn't help it that everything was so boring and that she couldn't pay attention to anything. In fact right now she was staring at the vice principal's forehead. Whenever he was annoyed the wrinkles on his forehead looked like a smaller face on his face and Verity couldn't help but stare instead of listening to the lecture. One minute, the forehead wrinkles were there, dancing across the vice principal's face, and the next, Verity blinked and suddenly the face wrinkles were gone. In fact the vice principal was gone and the entire front office seemed far too quiet for it being the middle of the school day. She stuck her head out of the vice principal's office. "Hello?" She called out in a confused voice.

message 18: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments Nixon was now jogging down the halls looking for any sign of anyone. Where the heck had everyone gone? It's not like everyone disappeared, right? I mean maybe it was a giant practical joke. That's when he heard a faint voice. He thought it had said hello. He called out to see if someone was there, "hello? Is anyone there? I'm kinda freaking out right now! Hello?" He jogged towards where he had thought he'd heard the voice hoping to find some answers.

message 19: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity left the vice principal's office and glanced around the front office. The receptionist was gone, as were all of the other students and counselors that had been rushing around during their free period. They had just vanished. A voice came from down the hall and Verity's head snapped in that direction. "Hello?" She called out again. Was there an assembly that she had forgotten about? Except that didn't explain the Vice Principal disappearing right in front of her. Verity walked timidly down the hall, peaking in doors, seeing that all of the classrooms were empty too. That was when she spotted movement at the end of the hall. She didn't know the person, but Verity definitely recognized them from around school.

message 20: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments He had definitely not been imagining the voice. He headed it again, this time loud and clear. He slowed his jog and rounded the corner. There was a girl he would know anywhere. Not because he knew her well, just everyone knew her. Loud outfits, disruptive, and funny. He had never met her, but he sorta admired her for being so original, it was nice to see. "Hey! Verity right? Um, any idea what's going on here? I can't find anyone in her except for you. Ive looked almost everywhere." He said. She was dressed in her usual unusual get up and had short, dark hair. Her brown eyes studied him intently like she was deciding if he was messing with her or telling the truth.

message 21: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "I um." Verity looked around like she was expecting people to jump out and laugh at her. It wouldn't be the first time people had pulled an elaborate prank on her because she was a bit of an oddball, but she couldn't deny the truth that the vice principal had disappeared from right in front of her. She picked at one of the patches on her overalls nervously, but still couldn't decide if this was a trick. "Did everyone go to an assembly?" She asked finally.

message 22: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Um, I don't think so, I mean, I checked there already. Was there a field trip that I didn't know about? Honestly, I'm kinda freaking out because my class was in the class room getting a lecture and then boom, I was alone. I don't know where anyone is. Should we call someone?" He asked sounding a bit on edge.

message 23: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "Yeah, um, maybe? The vice principal vanished too and so did everyone in the front office." This was the point in her life that Verity wished she had actually bought herself a cell phone instead of saving all of her money to get the hell out of dodge once she graduated in May. "Police handle missing persons right? Maybe we should call them."

message 24: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Yeah, good idea, here, I got a phone. I hope they figure all this out." He called 911 and waited. The phone rang for a long time and no one picked up. His face went a little pale. "Um, no one picked up the phone. It just rang for a really long time. I don't think that is a good sign at all." He said nervously. He really did not like what was happening. Maybe they should go find someone out on the street to help. "Hey, Verity, should we go outside and get someone? I'm sure they will know something."

message 25: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "The police station is down the street? I'll grab my keys." Verity replied and ran back to the front office where her bag was still sitting. She pulled her backpack on and headed back to where the guy was. She still didn't even know his name, but if this all turned out to be a prank, then she didn't really want to know it. At the same time, she hoped to god it was just a prank. "Okay I park in the North lot." Verity told him and headed towards the North exit of the school.

message 26: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments He followed her without further explanation. As they went, they still saw nothing. As they walked out onto the North lot, he felt like something was wrong. Then it hit him. He heard nothing. There was absolutely no sound coming from the highway next to the school. All of the cars on it weren't moving. No sound coming from their engines. Like they were frozen in time. "Verity, are you seeing what I'm seeing?" He asked.

message 27: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity stared at all of the cars stalled out on the roads, the absolute silence in a world where Verity was so used to the hum of people going about their days gave her chills. Then something crossed her mind and her heart dropped. "No." She gasped out and sprinted to her car, and climbed in. It was an old beat up truck with a roof over the tailgate, which Verity loved to death. She had planned to drive across the country in this car, but at the moment she was a little more concerned with something else. Verity fumbled with her keys and dropped them twice in her panic, but she eventually managed to get the engine started.

message 28: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Wait up! What is it?" Nixon yelled after her, confused at her sudden rush to get to her car. "Verity! What's going on? What happened?" He said, extremely confused. She looked like a ghost as all of the color had drained from her face. He was really starting to freak out, but he followed her anyway, quickly jumping into the passenger seat.

message 29: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity peeled out of the parking lot, the only thing going through her mind was a mantra of no's and prayers that she really was on the most elaborate prank show ever. Driving was absolutely nuts, especially since she had to swerve around unoccupied cars just sitting in the road. Her mind was a little too occupied by panic to answer the boy sitting in the passenger seat. She drove frantically and in silence for a while, heading out of town until she slammed on her brakes in front of what seemed to be just an empty lot of overgrowth and trees surrounded by an old wooden fence. Verity threw her car in park and sprinted from her car in a hurry, leaping over a the fence towards a house that was hard to see from the road with all of the vegetation. "Gran!" Verity shouted as she ran up the porch steps. "Gran are you home!"

message 30: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments Oh, he realized what she was doing. She was trying to find her loved ones. He hoped they were still there because the panic in her voice made him sad. She came out crying after a bit and he stood there, not knowing what to say. I mean, what could he say? "Verity... I... I'm sorry about your gran. I uh... I'm really sorry, but I don't think anyone is here." He said as she cried. He felt really terrible for her. He really didn't know what to do or say. So he just stood there, silent.

message 31: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity plopped down onto the front steps of her home and cried. The house was empty, her grandma was missing, as was the entire planet apparently. Everyone except for this stranger that went to her high school. Verity's grandma raised her after her dad passed away, her mom was just never in the picture. After a few minutes of crying, Verity realized that just sitting on her porch steps wasn't going to bring everyone back. She wiped the tears out of her eyes and looked up at the boy in front of her. "What's your name?"

message 32: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments He had been sitting there for a while until she finally spoke, asking his name. "Uh, I'm Nixon, friends call me nix, you can use either. Um, verity, im really sorry about your gran." He said, still uncomfortable. It would be nice if he could have this reaction to his family going missing, but to be honest, they never really interacted. He lived with them, and they gave him food and stuff, but that was as far as their relationship went. That was fine by him, it was nice and clean with no emotions.

message 33: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "Thanks." Verity replied in a near whisper and got to her feet. "So where do you think everyone went? I mean that many people can't have just disappeared right? I mean the entire city was devoid of life!" Verity bit at her thumbnail, an old nervous habit coming back under the stress of everything that has been happening.

message 34: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Um, idk, this is so weird." He checked his watch. Crap, it's broken or out of battery. He took out his phone and looked at the time. Weird, it was either broken or messed up too. He glanced at the sun, but it was as if it had t moved since the hour that they had been alone. Wait. The sun has to move. He looked at it again. Hmmmmm. "Verity, take me to a coffee shop." She looked at him like he was crazy. "Verity, please. Just, trust me ok?" He said.

message 35: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "Okay." Verity finally agreed, a little confused, before walking back to her car, climbing over the fence, and getting into the driver's seat. She didn't know why going to a coffee shop would be so important right now when everyone on the planet had disappeared, but at least it was a plan. Verity waited for Nixon to get into the passenger seat before putting her car back into drive and heading to the closest coffee shop back in town. Her gran lived on the outskirts in the areas that most people lived when they had farming land or cows so it was at least ten minutes before Verity pulled in front of a coffee shop, not even bothering to find a sparking spot. "Okay, now what?" She asked her new acquaintance as she got out of her car.

message 36: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Check your watch. It's probably stuck at 12:33 the moment everyone disappeared. My watch is, so is my iPhone. Hasn't changed a minute. Everyone disappears an our watches and time keeping don't work. I'm trying something. As they walk into the coffee shop he checks the clock. It's stuck. Then he sees what he's after. He picks it the cup and takes a sip. "Damn! That is scalding. At least we have an answer though. That coffee had to be made an hour ago. It shouldn't be scalding hot. It should barely be warm. Verity, call me crazy, but I think that coffee is hot because we are still only a minute away from when it was made. We ourselves are stuck at 12:33." He said as he watched for her reaction.

message 37: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "Then why isn't anyone else stuck here? And how do we get time to move again?" Verity asked, looking around the completely empty coffee shop. "And why is it just the two of us? We don't exactly have anything in common other than the school we go to. By that logic there would be a whole legion of high schoolers running around stuck at 12:33pm."

message 38: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Well, I dunno. I just think somehow we got stuck. And I have no idea about how to get us unstuck. I just know that we are stuck. Sorry." He said, shrugging his shoulders. He wasn't really sure he believed it himself, but it was the only explanation. Verity looked frustrated by his less than satisfying answer, but it was the best he could do. There wasn't much else he could say.

message 39: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity chewed on her thumbnail some more as she became deep in thought about her and Nixon's current predicament. There was just no rhyme or reason for why the two of them were left as the last two people on Earth, and what did being stuck at 12:33 even entail? Did the coffee being hot mean food would never go bad? Would they even age at all? How long were they stuck here? Verity felt the anxiety swallowing her up until suddenly she decided it didn't matter. Verity stopped chewing on her thumbnail and grinned at Nixon. "Well if we're going to be stuck here, might as well have fun while we're at it." She turned on her heel and left the coffee shop, walking straight across the street to the mall.

message 40: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Verity, wait up!" He called. Man, this chick was just moving everywhere. "What if we screw up the time space continuum?" He called jogging to catch up with her. She gave him a funny look and he said, "ok, fine, that won't happen, but shouldn't we try to do something? Do you think we're in any danger?" He asked. They had gotten halfway to the mall and Nixon was unsure of what exactly she had planned.

message 41: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "For all we know we are going to be stuck at 12:33 forever. We might not even age since not even the coffee cools. Which means we could live for like a millennia and run out of food and starve to death before it turns 12:34. So, I am going to enjoy myself right now and wait until later to worry about the consequences." Verity replied. Her logic was sound all things considered. She strode into the mall, grabbed a chair from the food court, and wandered around until she found what she was looking for. A jewelry store. She took the chair and hefted it above her head before throwing it at one of the display cases and shattering the glass. Verity laughed gleefully at the destruction. "I've always wanted to do that."

message 42: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments He was stuck with a crazy person Nixon concluded. Instead of worrying about getting home or if they could even do that, she was smashing through cases in a jewelry store. Great. He watched her have her fun figuring, maybe it was just a different way of grieving. "Verity, are you sure you should be breaking into a jewelry store?" He knew she didn't care, but he was still kinda worried. But hey, maybe verity was right, why not have a little fun.

message 43: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "Should is a very delicate term in our situation." Verity replied almost immediately and fished something that caught her eye out of the broken glass. It was a tacky gold leafed brooch shaped like a bee that she pinned to the strap of her cutoff overalls. "Because time should be passing, I should be in school getting scolded for my undiagnosed ADHD, and the sun should set tonight, but I definitely doubt that any of that is going to happen so why should I listen to the rules of society?" Verity then made her way over to the register where she scanned an item, causing the cash drawer to open, and took out a roll of quarters. "What's your favorite type of old school candy?" She asked Nixon as she left the jewelry store and skipped over to the candy cart.

message 44: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments Nixon had to admit, she had a point, as crude as it was. "Ok... I guess." He replied following her over to the candy cart. While she was getting a ton of candy, he noticed a couple of Segways. "Hey verity, ever ridden a segway? Because there's a pair over there with our names written all over it." He said mischievously. Honestly, handling things like verity did was so much easier. No worrying, no problems. He jumped on a Segway and started messing around with it, learning how to work it.

message 45: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity continued sticking quarters into the candy machines until she had her pockets stuffed full with gumballs before she turned towards Nixon. "Now that's the spirit!" Verity laughed before hopping on the other segway. "How does this even wor-" Verity started to say before the segway jolted into action and reversed into the store window behind her. "HOLY SHIT!" Verity laughed as the segway continued reversing through the display and bumping into shelves before she finally figured out how to control it. She popped a gumball into her mouth before zooming back out of the store window and through the mall on her segway.

message 46: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments Nixon followed with a hoot and a holler. They sped through the mall, knocking things over and making a mess of things. It was awesome. "Hey Verity, how come we never did this before!?" He yelled after her, both of them weaving in and out of displays and stands.

message 47: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments "Probably because we'd be arrested!" Verity replied as she turned the next corner, only to stop. "Did you see that?" Verity asked suddenly. She was sure she saw something moving, but when she looked again, there was nothing out of place about the mall other than the fact that it was empty. "Weird." She muttered to herself before she rolled over to the nearest mall cart and kicked it over with one solid push, send all of the little nick-knacks and trinkets flying in a satisfying crash.

message 48: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "What do you mean? What did you see?" He asked as she muttered to herself as she kicked the cart over. He didn't get an answer so he just shrugged, eh well. They continued on the Segway side for a bit longer then got bored. They made their way to the food court and found some sandwiches. "He Verity, whaddya think-" he abruptly stopped. He rubbed his eyes. Over Verity's shoulder, prowling the hall was exactly what his version of a chupacabra looked like. Oh crap. "Verity we need to get out of here now. We need to get out of here right now." He said in a low voice.

message 49: by quincy (new)

quincy | 294 comments Verity had just taken a huge bite of her sandwich when she noticed Nixon's look of fear. She swallowed and turned around to see what he was looking at. "Wha- OH!" Verity fought the urge to scream because whatever that creature was, it was not something that was supposed to be found in a mall. She stood slowly and backed towards the mall exit, keeping her eyes on the animal.

message 50: by Mac (new)

Mac K (mac_k99) | 1741 comments "Verity, no sudden movements. Just take it nice and easy and when we make it to the door, ease it open, and once it's closed, we run to your car and get out of here." He told her as they slowly moved to their escape. They made it out the door and then they took off sprinting, as a hard as they could to her car. "Holy crap that was insane! What the check was that!" He exclaimed as verity burned rubber taking off.
