I'm going to start this on audio Thursday night as a checkout from the library. I read the first three but either Dani or Aristea loved the narrator so I'm going to give it a shot. I know it's late notice but where my reads are usually planned out my audio selections are much more capricious. If anybody wants to join great.

I'm actually about to listen to this after I'm done Strange the Dreamer so you are right on schedule with me!

And you will love the narrator. He's great at all the little noises Abercrombie puts into his fighting and sex scenes hahaha

That's quite the shocking commentary give it's source. :)

Will be a day or so late starting this one. But have serious plans to actually comment and contribute to the Buddy Read. We will see if I can actually pull it off

I'm trying to finish it off in June. If I do the bare minimum will be 2 series completed and 2 brought up to date and the two brought up to date are both big.

I just starting #7 a couple days ago. Going slooowwww, so you might catch/pass me.

I'm very interested in BSC. Been wanting to read it for forever. I was hoping the finishing of school would open up my reading but it hasn't really kicked in yet.

I feel like I've been waiting forever! Anyways, yes I totally get you Scott now that we are well beyond the midpoint of the series my mojo to finish it is amping up.

Abercrombie isn't the smoothest writer but he definitely keeps the actioning coming. Great prologue and even though you primarily know where this is all going it's highly entertaining. He also loves to cripple people.

Haha he sure does, that event in the beginning had a very Princess Bride feel to it!

I just love the subtle humor of Abercrombie, like in previous books how the sun would be shining and birds happy and twittering.. and how much that grated on the nerves of the character

You enjoying the narrator? To me he's perfect for this series.

He's done a few other series I've listen to including BotF. The last two books of Botf I listened as I read. For whatever reason Malazan Empire has a different narrator that I don't like nearly as much.

It is hard when you have read books and you picture a character a certain way and the voice is different. Cosca was part of the trilogy and I had him with more of a Spanish accent and much more of a rouge. I've adapted. Shivers was also in the trilogy and his voice was fine from the start.

I'd comment on this more but there's really no plot to theorize on or any great twists. Not that I haven't been enjoying it. Just straight forward.

I've been thinking the same thing too! Like what would I update on? But really though why the eyeball scenes... shudder

Done. When do you wanna do Heroes?

I liked it for sure, 4.5 stars. If he didn't write characters and their (de)evolution so well with that subtle humor I don't think I would like his writing. Sometimes the plot is just.....

I'll finish tonight or tomorrow. It's a 4* for me. I've liked it but I haven't loved it and it's only that high for the reasons you mention. Definitely not as good as the trilogy.

I probably won't do the next one until July. If you're hot to blow through these don't let me hold you up.

It's all good, I've got a few Expanse books, temeraire, Robin Hobb etc to finish up so I think we can make that work!

not good to see these comments regarding the plot and that you prefer the trilogy over this one. I thought the trilogy was very mediocre. It did get better each book, but the story just wasn't all that good for me. I didn't have Abercrombie high on my reading list but it seems I'll have to drop him a bit more then...

That was me. Glokta's lisp in particular I thought was genius.
Enjoy.

He was very good. I've listened to him on other series. Glokta wasn't in this book. I'm not sure if he's in 5 or 6 either. I know part of 7 has him. That's a short story book filling in where different characters came from. His part he's the glorious Glokta of youth who is then captured and falls.

Drew (hurricanedaddy) | 35 comments Unfortunately, Glokta does not appear in the three standalones. But they are SO worth reading. Particularly The Heroes.

message 32: by Rob (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rob (priam_agrivar) | 2418 comments I read this, but didn't do the audio version. It may be my favorite of all of Abercrombie's work on a novel by novel basis. I go back and forth with this one and The Heroes

message 33: by Liam (new)

Liam | 11 comments I have read this also and would agree that its the best of Abercrombie's books although my personal Favourite is Red Country ... the Shattered Sea Trilogy also excellent, he has a gift for building some really angry characters

message 34: by Rob (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rob (priam_agrivar) | 2418 comments I enjoyed Red Country too, but felt it lacked the chaos and intrigue of the other two :)

I so agree I think my love for it is down to purely to Cosca :)

I feel like is also kind of nostalgic especially as I read them as they were released it felt like a family reunion in a sense...

Rob (priam_agrivar) | 2418 comments Cosca rocks. At least he showed up again in that book of short stories recently.
