Rebecca | 215 comments It's my favorite time of the year, Summer Reading! And this is our tenth annual adult summer reading kick off! Our theme this year is Build a Better World: Recycle Reduce Reuse.

Ever year to help patrons complete the game, which I'll explain below, we put together a display with some suggestions for the different game categories. Here you'll find some suggestions for the Environmentally Safe, Buy in Bulk, Sustainable Living, and Thrift Store Finds categories. The display is just some options that you have for the game, but you do not have to read a book off the display if you don't want to.

description

To sign up for the Build a Better World: Recycle Reduce Reuse Game stop by the Research and Readers Services kiosks in the library. You'll need to fill out a short registration card and you'll then receive your game board. The object of the game is to "recycle, reduce, or reuse" four of the categories shown at the LPL Recycling Center inside the game board.

LPL Recycling Center Recycle/Reduce/Reuse Categories

1. Carbon Footprint: Read or listen to a book in a digital format.
2. Environmentally Safe: Read a book about the impact of human waste on the planet.
3. Recycle: Re-read a book that you've read before.
4. Up-cycle: Read a book that a friend or librarian has recommended to you.
5. Buy in Bulk Read a book over 500 pages. (The longer the book, the less trips to the library to grab another!)
6. Sustainable Living: Read a nonfiction or how-to book that contains insights into sustainable living and/or reducing your carbon footprint.
7. Thrift Store Finds: Read a nonfiction book about using thrifty finds or a fiction book featuring characters or events connected to thrifting.
8. Break the Habit: Make a change and trying doing something in a new way! Read a book in a style or genre that is outside your normal routine.

As you finish your books, present your game board at one of the Research & Readers Services kiosks to have your category stamped at the LPL Recycling Center and receive the available corresponding prize as indicated below.

1. The first 100 participants to "recycle, reduce, or reuse" one category (read one book) on the game board will receive a Build a Better World-themed book bag.

2. The first 100 participants to "recycle, reduce, or reuse" two categories (read two books) on the game board will receive a Build a Better World-themed spiral-bound note set.

3. The first 100 participants to "recycle, reduce, or reuse" three categories (read three books) on the game board will receive a Build a Better World-themed stainless steel drink tumbler.

4. All participants who "recycle, reduce, or reuse" four categories (read four books) will be entered into a prize drawing. The drawing will take place on Thursday, August 3, 2017.

The program runs from 9 a.m., Thursday, May 25 through 8 p.m., Thursday, July 28, 2017 so stop by the kiosks today to sign up and don't forget to stop by the display to pick up a fun read!
