I wasn't convinced about the idea that the Death could fall in love so easily with a man that wasn't described as a special person, for who it worth it to quit the important "mission" of killing human beings.

The first infatuation resulted from this man not responding to her call :-) It was furthered by his musical performance, which he was able to deliver even better when she - death - was the only one present. Also this man appears to be not only a member of the human race, but also of another stratum of the living. The story suggests that this trait is unique. I couldn't find in the story whether it intrigues the protagonist, but it surely intrigues me.
