Hey Readers,

Welcome back! This week is all about part 3 of the book (Chapters 16-20 [inclusive])

Remember this is an open discussion, but try not to post out of the parts being discussed. Have fun!

1. Lay it on us – who are your favourite characters so far? Why do they stand out for you?

2. If you could be any character/have any of their skills, which would it be?

3. Who do you trust the most and who do you trust the least out of the gang at this point?

Send us your favourite quotes from this part for #DABbookclub

We're kicking off the Week 2 discussions with our favourite characters. We're a bit divided at team Date A Book.

We have two favourite characters (split between three of our team members!)

Jesper (2 DAB faves) - he's pretty sassy. If fact, we think he's the sassiest gunslinger out there. He’s a really interesting character – he seems to outwardly portray much more loyalty and feeling than a lot of the Dregs, but he has his own demons too.

Nina (1 DAB fave) - because we absolutely adore her passion, her Grisha power and her love of food! Seriously, you can't go wrong with a girl who packs toffees on a dangerous trip because Kaz tells her to bring the essentials.

Do you think you would trust Matthias more if he'd been part of the Dregs' crew from the start? Is it his resistance to their cause that makes you wary of him?

p.s. we also love Inej's skills. It's amazing how she can sneak up on so many people. How does she do it!?

Meg (totally_megs) | 4 comments 1. At that point in the book it was definitely Kaz and Wylan. Kaz because he's absolutely ruthless, and Wylan because he's so innocent at this point. (Also Jesper and Inej get a special mention, because they're absolutely amazing)

2. I reckon Inej's skills, who wouldn't want to be able to scale a wall in a few seconds? But also Nina's Grisha powers too :D

3. I think I would Nina the most, she's so unashamedly herself and she can hold her own (and has a bit of a smart mouth - love it!) and Matthias got on my nerves quite a bit for most of the book, especially at the start, so I'd probably trust him the least even if he wouldn't spill anything

Kim (secretmagic) | 7 comments My favourites are Nina and Matthias (although it looks like I might be the lone supporter of Team Matthias).

I don't know if I locked onto Nina as a favourite because, being Grisha, she was familiar within a new world - but I definitely fell for her playful exterior and hidden vulnerable side. And I loved that we got to see more of her relationship with Matthias in this part: the shipwreck and trekking through the icy wilderness. Nina brings out a different side of Matthias and I love her for that.

I've always been weirdly drawn to characters that have epic weaponry aim - but normally bows and arrows or knife throwing. So I guess the skill I'd want is Jesper's aim. But I also really like characters that tinker with things, so Wylan's trinket building/demo skills would be great too!

It also just hit me that none of their "skills" are very gentle. It's all a bit destructive: guns, knives, blowing things up, stopping hearts with super awesome Grisha skills, stealing through slight of hand. The good-natured side of me feels like there needs to be like a butterfly summoner or something to balance the scales.

Kimberley wrote: "I think I would trust him more of he wasn't so closed minded. I understand that's just how he has been raised, much like with Nina, but with him it just rubs me the wrong way. I want to like him as he has nice moments, they just get clouded for me."

It's hard, because you can see that the way the Fjerdans think - that all Grisha are evil because they have magic and are tricky liars - is a very backwards way of viewing the world. Lumping all Grisha in the same boat.

And to be fair he hasn't seen much to change that way of thinking, with Nina being his only real up-close and personal experience with Grisha (despite the cargo full of Grisha on the Fjerdan ship).

Chloe wrote: "3. I think in getting a job done I would trust Kaz but in any other circumstance I wouldn't just cause I feel as long as he comes out on top it doesn't really matter what happens to anyone else."

This seems to follow on from our Week 1 discussions. Kaz's complexity makes him a tricky one to work with. As long as his goals match your own, he's probably the best person to have on your side. But can you trust that his goals will remain in line with yours?

Kim (secretmagic) | 7 comments In real life, I think that would annoy the hell out of me - never knowing which side Kaz was on. It's a good thing it is fiction, and that it makes him such an interesting character!

Arwen (rosenectur) | 5 comments 1. Inej, Inej, Inej! I find her much more likeable that some of the others, (sorry Jasper fans, but he's was my least favorite at this point.)

2. I don't think I'd like to be any of them, because they all have tortured back stories. But having Grisha powers would be pretty neat.

It looks like Inej is a fan favourite on Goodreads - but she's falling behind in our Twitter polls! Kaz is giving her a good run for her money (very true to character if money was actually involved!)

Jessica's Bookworld | 11 comments 1. I think my favourite characters would have to be Nina and Matthias and Wylan. Wylan mainly because he intrigues me because he is still so mysterious as we know nothing about him and he hasn't even had his own chapter yet (does he even get one? I hope so). I also like Nina and Matthias is Part 3 because we now know their background and why their relationship is the way it is and they both believe in their causes that they are fighting for despite being challenged in ways that might set people in the opposite direction. I'm hoping they continue to attempt to get along more in the rest of the book. I'm guessing they end up together.

2. That's easy I would be Inej for her stealthy ways. Her skills would be amazing to sneak around at night around our house where our kids wake up at the slightest sound.

3. Hmm this is hard. I can't say that I trust anyone but if I had to pick one maybe Kaz. He seems to have everything planned out fairly well, with backup plans in place too. And who do I trust the least it would have to be Jesper only because I feel like I don't know too much about him and with his gambling he could have debts anywhere that can be called in at any time.

Wylan is definitely a curious character! He's not ruthless-mysterious like Kaz, because Wylan's a bit too gentle for that, but it leaves you with a lot of questions about his past.

But, rightly mentioned, the same can be said about Jesper. The difference being that Jesper appears to speak his mind too much to be hiding anything epic, don't you think? Or maybe he's craftier than he lets on!

sarah (bookie_wookiee) 1. Inej and Jesper. Inej has had such an amazing story so far and is loyal to the dregs without assimilating. It was a nice touch that she didn't get the crow and cup tattoo.
Jesper has that sense of humour that I gravitate towards. I believe a good joke and dash of sarcasm and break any tension.
Can they both be my best friends?

2. Inej has amazing skills. I am a very clumsy person and would love to flit in and out of the shadows like she does.

3. I trust Nina and Inej because they need this heist to get what they want. Nina wants to repay Matthias and mend that relationship and Inej wants to leave Ketterdam. She also cares about Kaz a lot and I can't see her betraying him.

I don't trust Matthias or Wylan. Matthias because he's very loyal to his people and could easily screw everything up at the Ice Court in the name of his morals. Wylan because we haven't had a POV chapter from him (yet). I'm not sure what his motivations are.

Sarah wrote: "1. Inej and Jesper...Can they both be my best friends?"

Yes. We've prayed to Inej's Saints and they have told us you can definitely be best friends with both of them.

From what we've seen from readers so far, you're not alone in being wary of Matthias. He's the only character without a solid connection to the Dregs or Ketterdam - his loyalty is questionable. But his Fjerdan training is all about honour and structure. Is it likely that he's going to break that training after giving his word to Kaz, even if it means going against his country?

Wylan's part is a bit different. He's just so cute and innocent. But you know what they say, it's the quite ones you have to watch out for!
