Is it someone who just wears black, or do they have to be all out black magic with chains coming from their clothes? I think you're only goth, if you like black ALOT and do a little magic. A person who just wears black isn't goth. Goth is sorta like a religion.

Being goth means you truly admire dark music like Sisters of Mercy or Bauhaus. If you just wear black and chains and think it's cool is a poser fashion goth. That's not ok. You don't even have to practice any kind of magic. Being goth is being true to yourself, not acting all depressed and appreciating the dark side of things that normal people miss.
I can understand that. This is just my point of view from what everyone else says. Never heard it put like that.
I think that if you dont fit in and everyone keeps trying to stick a goddamn label on you like "emo, goth, punk" because you wear black alot, or wear chains, and black make-up, then your truly a non fitter. In my small little world, there are two catagories, non fitters, and weezers. Weezers are people who try so hard to fit in, or else just easily fit in. Non fitters are people who dont care whether you fit in or not. I think goths are non fitters. Dark magic, cutting, and sulking around are some peoples way of expressing yourself. Like me, i like blood, but i dont cut, i just watch gorey movies.
i don't know what i am...cause' there r MANY times i want to fit in, but i like bein' different (when i'm not being teased). My bf obviously doesn't think i wierd.
emo, is emotional, goth is gay, and punk is puke, jkjk!!! my friend made that up, heres my definitionemo: a person with mixed emotions about life, and can't make up there minds.
goth: dark and desolate, seperated from the world but connected thru black magic
punk: a mix of prep with goth, loves metal, but not screamo, wheres pink and black together
I consider my sister-in-law goth. She favors very dark colours and use to wear many death-themed pieces of jewelry. =)
you know you dont have to believe in the religion to be goth!! some people may disagree, but thats just my perspective!! And im sorry but i think the religion is stupid!! haha but anyway yall can hate me if ya want.. but i am goth wether im a "true" goth or not now thats a different story!!
my definitions of emo, goth....not too sure about prep.
Emo- someone who is emotional, not fully connecte with the world, writes poetry, and sometimes cuts themselves.
Goth- someone who sticks out in a crowd and doesn't give a *bleep* what ther ppl think.
I'm goth and my ex-bf (soon to be mt bf again) is emo....but he doesn't cut himself anymore

i agree with Mzzz!!hannah, are you sure you aren't suffering from insanity? (JK JK) i don't really think there'a such a thing as "TRUE" goth. i've heard of vampire goth fairy goth....all kinds. i think the important thing is yu're true to yourself. you don't need a title!!
goth is just a word and it's meaning changes throught the year. personally i believe it to be something people uste to express themselves when they feel they cant do it any other way. my friends call me happy emo and my sister calls me goth but i dont cut im interested in magic, i live in fantasy cuz reality's boring, and black is the prime god of color[pink sucks anchovies].i call myself a complex individual and thats wat we all are
well what i consider goth to be is people who are very diffrnet and like things that are unusual like vampires and the devil and going to the graveyard at night to hang out thats kinda what i think it is
LOL YA BUT THATS KINDA WHAT I THINK IT IS AND BEING YOURSELF AND YOURSELF IS NOT LIKED IN WHAT THEY CALL SASIEY LOL
A lot of people in the group has been saying this, and I totally agree:Just becuase you wear black doesn't mean you are Goth.
I've read this from Goth Craft by Raven Digitalis (good first guide, I must say) and this one sentence might come in handy:
"Goth isn't what someone does, its who someone is"
I must complement you on your post, Curt. Job well done for clearing that up.
I think of real goth as a paradigm more than a 'religion' or 'culture'Being goth, though, is very much a genre (music, movies, clothes, makeup, what have you)
The Goth are the intellectual elite, the chosen, able to see and admire beauty in death and darkness, to single out and appreciate true literary gems in art of all its forms and manifestations.
Goth is a state of mind if you think and enjoy the darker side of thing and can see the beauty in darkness you a goth. I think after that the cloths and makeup will follow behind.
Goth has SO many connotations, that it's impossible to pin down and has so many angles to it. Some Goths who got into the scene during the 80's when the music was the most important element probably still fully believe that Goth is and always should be a music subculture. Not gonna lie, Goth clubs and jamming to The Cure is pretty great. But we can't deny it's roots in 19th century Romanticism either, with poets like Poe and Lord Byron giving us the melancholy and sadness that many Goths like to wear, along with the ruffly shirts and historical clothing, and the penchant for absinthe and graveyards.
And still, some of you newer to the scene or well under the age of 30 might just be in it because you like black clothes, Halloween, spooky stuff, and delving into alternative religions and ways of thinking. And that's cool, too, I won't tell you you're not a Goth.
