NZ Intermediate School Librarians discussion

A story about surviving the Nazi regime, both at the time and then living with the trauma after the end of WWII. Johannes, a Polish boy, and his parents ( not Jewish) are sent off to a Nazi concentration camp in 1944. Frau Marks - the mother of Georg from Jackie French's "Pennies from Hitler", is a German but was married to man with a Jewish grandparent. She is caught sheltering Jewish orphans and so she is sent to a concentration camp. Also "Helga" whose past is a bit mysterious. She has not been in a camp, and she carries a dark secret and terrible guilt.
Jackie French writes in the Acknowledgements that this is the most important book she has written (and she has written a lot!). The book's main theme is of the importance of being able to forgive - for both an individual's good, and for the good of humankind.
An excellent read. Would be a great Read Aloud, as long as the listeners aren't too sensitive (there are many harrowing scenes).
