One thing that struck me was that the working class characters in Mary Barfoot were mostly decent, kind, intelligent, self-respecting and even cultured. In the Nether World, not so much. Apart from Sidney and Jane and her grandfather, most the characters were either coarse or stupid or on the make.

This is a place of spoilers (for BOTH of the books). Beware.
