VOTE AUGUST 2017 BOTM, Goldsmith - Hartley
date
newest »

And I forgot to mention, you may vote for up to 5 books if you have the 1 free, 4 participation points or use all participation points on the same book. Any other questions?
Check out the price of The Opposing Shore. On Amazon you can purchase a paperback copy for just $566
Anyway, I voted already since I wanted to vote before seeing the other votes come in (so as not be influenced). Lots of good options this month.

How about the 22nd, midnight EST? I will announce results on the 23rd.

It's a good one, makes a good discussion book. It was BOTM in past but not 2015.

It is a really good discussion book. I read it when it was a past BOTM but do think it would be a good one to discuss and you should read it regardless of whether it wins or not. Exit West was fantastic. He's becoming an author I follow.

If you don't see your name on the spreadsheet, it's probably b/c you have not accrued participation points yet. You'll still be able to vote with your one free vote. Your name will be added to the spreadsheet once you've accrued at least one additional participation point. But let us know if there's an error. Book Worm will correct it for you.

I will definitely read it. I loved Exit West.

Yes, one vote is free.

I found myself a reasonable priced copy in French. For used books I usually check out abebooks. They normally have better prices than amazon itself. For this book as well.
I don't want you to think that I am not supporting the new process. I am not voting because I am participating in the two challenges (Jen's and Patrick's) and the seasonal read. I can't squeeze in one more book. Good luck everyone.
I did accidentally omit July's People so added that as the #53 book, it is out of order so if you want to vote for that one, I don't want you to miss it.
Well, I have about 8 books in possession from this set of books but I am afraid they have little chance to get chosen. I really like Hardy's writing, I have wanted to read the The Go-Between for several years now and I have several Graham Greene books. He has not been chosen as a BOTM since the Quiet American.
But I voted.
But I voted.
Just a quick explanation of the spreadsheet for you all.
The people who have their own thread tracking their points for the year I have used these points in the spreadsheet and made your names bold.
The people who do not have their own thread have been calculated to the best of the ability of the admins and your names are not in bold. If you could make your own threads going forward this would be really useful for us to track.
There are columns showing points earned, points spent, balance of points to spend and a running total that will show the points earned for the year without the deductions so you will still be able to see how well you have done.

Voting is pretty close so far and we've already had more people vote in the first three days of voting this month than voted last month. If you haven't had a chance to vote yet, make sure you get your vote in by end of week. Every vote counts, especially those participation point votes.
Voting closes on Saturday. Make sure you all get your votes in for book of the month. The voting is REALLY close between the 4 top books.
I received a vote from "zippy mom" whose user name I don't recognize. This person voted for "exit West." I'm not sure if you meant to vote for the reluctant fundamentalist since Exit West is NOT a 1001 book.
If that is you, please revote and let me know who you are since I don't see a zippy mom as a username under our group of members.

How will you deal with a tie (just curious)? Randomizer? Using the number of individuals who voted for it (as opposed to participation points) as a tie breaker? It seems like ties could be likely . . .

Chances are we will have to vote again to decide between the top 4. I can't say which they are yet since I don't want to sway the vote but you'll probably be happy ;)

Right now there is a 3-way tie. We will have to discuss among admins but most likely we will revote on just the top 3-4 books. So folks who didn't vote for one of those 4 books will be able to recast their votes. Once we've all discussed behind the scenes, we'll announce the exact strategy. Then again, it's possible that the next two days we could get some tie breakers.

Ahh, thanks for sharing what you are thinking. I was just curious as with so many choices, I was sure some ties would be inevitable.

Yes, I also think that people will learn pretty quickly that using up participation points and advocating for certain books Us a big impact.
It will be interesting to see what happens as we try out this system

Those of you following this thread, please note that we are having a run-off voting between the top 4 books. We had record voting this month and quite a competitive race between the top 4. Please see instructions for next stage here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I will announce the final winner and the randomized book either by thursday am OR once i've received all votes from those eligible to recast.
Also, please note that we will be voting again soon for September books so that going forward we will be voting for books that we will be reading in 2 months. Why? Book Worm brought up the point that it can be hard for her to get a hold of books in a timely manner (waiting for library holds or book orders). Since we have changed points for BOTM starting August (you now have to complete the BOTM in the month assigned to receive 3 points), we want to make sure everyone can get a hold of the book in time. If we vote two months ahead, then it gives everyone a little extra time to locate and get a hold of the book.

I will be posting September books today for Voting for BOTM. As Jen notes above, we are trying to get two months ahead so that we have more time to find books. It will also give you a second time to try out the new voting. I know I learned something the first time.
I won't be posting September voting until we finish with current voting so that participation points can be accurate. So sometime, probably next weekend.
As we've mentioned, September voting will be coming up relatively soon. Bear with us since after this September vote we'll be back on a normal voting schedule (once a month).
Want to earn an extra participation point in anticipation of our september voting? Answer the question here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... for one extra point. New question every monday.

In case you missed it, we are doing things different this month. I will be posting all books elibible for voting in one long string. I will not be providing the detail information. You may use the hyperlink to read more about that book and author.
Only one book will be chosen by votes. You have one free vote and up to 4 participation points depending on how many participation points you have. See https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... for your participation points.
Voting is by secret ballot using Survey Monkey. Jen will announce the winner of the voting. Bookworm will select our second book from all eligible books in Goldsmith through Hartley by randomizer. We will only be voting on books less than 600 pages. We would like winning book to receive at least 10 votes. Here is the link to vote,
