This topic is open to discuss The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1) by Rick Riordanby Renee Ahdieh.
Be prepared for spoilers!

Synopsis:

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

Chapters 1-8

1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?

I read the first two of this series ages ago and I'm not sure why I never finished them. So I thought now was a good chance to restart the series since I remember liking it a lot. I haven't read any of Riordan's other works.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?
Yes, several times, which made me forget that Percy is actually 12, not 15! I think the first movie did better than the 2nd and I liked them just fine, but I can see how they decided to stop making them. It's too bad, really.

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!
I like that he's so ordinary! He has to really work to figure out what he's good at, just like everyone else. And he seems really humble but also willing to fight for what's right.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?
Well, I def think he's grieving- he's just also holding out hope that he can find her again. And as for her return, I can't remember how faithful the movie is to the book, but her fate is pretty clear in the movie lol.

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?
Like I've said, I'm vaguely familiar with the story already, so I kinda know what happens. But in general I think it means more respect from the other campers and more chances to go on quests since he should theoretically be stronger than the others, etc.

I read this a few years ago too and never got to book 2 so I figured it was worth the re-read.
I don't think I've seen the movies. I may need to check if I can get them

Totally agree about Percy. Great to have an "ordinary" kid become a hero

Chapters 1-8

1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?

I read up to The House of Hades, which is in the spinoff series, and the first 2 of the Egyptian god series. But it was a very long time ago.

My youngest daughter is a huge fan, and was quite disappointed I never finished the entire story arc. I know I enjoyed them, so I figured why not.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?

Yes, and while I enjoyed it, I was also extremely disappointed.

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!

Love Percy! He's not typical, which makes him so great. I saw an interview with Riordan who said he wrote this for his son who has ADHD and is dyslexic, so you can really appreciate all the nuisances he used to make those things be positive, and how he took this normal kid, with all these struggles and made him into this incredible Demi-God.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?

ETA: This was a prime example for me where I was disappointed with the movie vs the book. In the movie, they know he's the son of Poseidon all along. Grrrr....

Not gonna answer these last 2 since I know where it's all going.

Alysa H. | 3959 comments 1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?

I haven't read anything by Riordan before, but A) I've had this book for like 4 years and just hadn't gotten around to it, and also recently picked up #s 2 and 3 at a paperback book swap in my building; and B) my daughter is almost old enough to read this series and knows other kids who like it, so I figured I'd see for myself whether it's worth giving her at least the first book.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?
Nope!

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!
He's very endearing. Sympathetic, a bit snarky, and quite in touch with his feelings for a book geared towards boys.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?
Yes. In fact, when I started this book I was happy to see the good relationship between son and mother, rather than typical "orphan" trope where the kids can have adventured because the parents are conveniently out of the way. So for this reason I was actually a little bummed that the mother disappeared so quickly after all. Literally disappeared! But summer camp is a good excuse, I supposed.

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?

I'd already guessed about the Poseidon connection, as I think most older readers would, and of course this means water-related powers. Maybe Percy can breathe underwater too?

1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?

Yes iv read the full Percy Jackson series, the heroes of Olympus, and currently listening to the trails of Apollo on audiobook,
I love Percy Jackson and completing in the read gives me a chance to read from the beginning again!

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?
Yes both and I loved the first one and give or take the second but have still watched multiple times and was gutted the series didn't get carried on!

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!

He not a typical hero but I think that is what makes him a perfect character you can relate to him being some what normal ( even with the extra powers )

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?

As stated I have read the series so I know how this turns out but still fun to keep guessing

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?

I think this means more trouble with one of the big three being his father with an added vinous of more respect and adventures for Percy

Ash | 206 comments 1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?
-
No, but I've always wanted to get into his stories. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about all of them, especially Percy Jackson. So when this was selected as a book of the month, it was the perfect opportunity.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?
-
I saw the movie a while ago. Forgot basically every single plot point, but from what I do remember, eh, the movie was okay. I didn't really care for it, but it introduced me to Logan Lerman & Alex Daddario, two actors I now love very much, so I'm thankful for that.

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!
-
I really love Percy! I think he's a character many people can relate to. I also really like how reluctant he is to take to all this new information about gods and the general situation he's found himself in. I like that he didn't just instantly believe everything he heard. I think that's a realistic reaction and one I definitely would've had too. I love his snark too. It's one of my favorite aspects of his personality, he cracks me up so much.

"You want to gargle with toilet water again, Clarisse? Close your mouth." < Had me rolling.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?
-
I think he did grieve. He thinks about his mom and misses her, but because he wants to believe that there's still a chance he'll see her again, I think that hope helps keep the sadness at bay and helps him not to dwell on it.

I think there's a chance for her return. When it comes to books, movies, etc. I don't believe anyone's gone for good until I see confirmation of a dead body. 'Til then, anything's possible, especially in a story like this.

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?
-
I wish I could've felt surprised at the big reveal of Percy's father, but it's pretty much common knowledge at this point, so I was actually getting really impatient from all the build up and speculation haha. Still was nice when it was finally confirmed, though. As for what this means for him: Power, lots of trials and trouble and danger coming his way, and the chance to discover more about himself and his father.

I think people will treat him differently too. Maybe the fellow campers will start treating him with more respect? Maybe people will have high expectations for him too, since he's the son of a very powerful, major god. Maybe they'll expect him to act a certain way or have a certain amount of power and strength. Maybe there's a new standard he'll have to live up to?

It's funny how movies can change characters like that.

I have enjoyed how young he is because it means NO LOVE TRIANGLE which is so common in YA Fantasy books! :D

Josie (josiemichele) | 96 comments 1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?
I've read The Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, The Heroes Of Olympus series, The Kane Chronicles, as well as the current series The Trials Of Apollo and Magnus Chase & The Gods Of Asgard. Plus other random books that go with the series. I'm joining this read because I bought the newish boxset of the series with the new covers.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?
Yes, I have. It's not good, it had a lot of differences like it didn't stick to the story that well. It's also super cheesy. The movie for the Sea Of Monsters is better. I did like Logan Lerman as Percy though, even though he's older in the movie than in the books.

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!
I love that about him, he is so funny! I just love his attitude and he does grow a lot throughout the books. He is very loyal which is great.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?
He does grieve, but he is so set on trying to get her back than allowing the possibility that she might be dead. Not answering the second question, because spoilers.

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?
The children of the "big three" are the most powerful demigods. This means a lot for Percy. It's not a good thing as you can tell by how Chrion acts regarding who Percy's father is and what all is going on. Clarisse is such a bully.

This is my first book by him. I've been meaning to read the series ever since they made the movies. That's how I found out about the series.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?

I have seen the movie. I liked it okay, and I'm sure, like most times, the book will be better. So far, it is very good.

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!

No, he is not typical. At first he seems to underestimate himself because of what he goes through at school. Inside, I was cheering him on,"You can do it!" He seems to find a lot of strength in the love of his mom. Not physical, but emotional, and kind of mental. I think that's how he defeated the Minotaur. He's like an iceberg, there's not much at the surface yet, but there's a lot to be discovered underneath.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?

I think she can return. Heroes have tried to return others from the Underworld before. Even though they have failed, it could finally work for his mom.

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?

He is going to be in more danger than the other Half-bloods because of the pact that Poseidon wasn't supposed to have anymore kids. Whenever Percy is not at the summer camp, he will be sought out by the Kindly Ones.

6. Chiron seems pretty sure that the lightening thief is Hades. Do you think it's really that simple? Any thoughts on who else it may be? Percy has already been assigned a Quest and met with the Oracle. You'd think he'd need at least a bit more training before he's sent off to the Underworld. What was your reaction to the Oracle? A friend will betray him, and he'll ultimately fail to save what matters most. Sounds pretty ominous.

7. The trio isn't off to their best start. Battling all 3 Furies, destroying a bus, losing all their money and backpacks, followed by stumbling into Auntie M's. Were you surprised by who Auntie M turned out to be or had you figured it out? The statues everywhere reminded me of the White Witch's castle in the Narnia series, plus there was the fact that it was Percy's namesake, Perseus, who originally defeated Medusa in the myths. Percy mailing her head to Mt. Olympus was kind of funny. There isn't much lag-time in this novel, it's pretty much nonstop. Are you enjoying the pace? If is your first time reading, are you enjoying it?

8. Percy battles Echidna and a Chimera at the top of the Gateway Arch then dives into the river. The fact that water instantly heals him is turning out to be quite the helpful trick. He also gets a visit from a messenger in the river who implies his mother's fate may still be in question and gives him a message from his father. Do you think Poseidon is doing all he can to help Percy, or do you think he should be doing more?

9. Ares buys them lunch and asks for a favor. Despite Percy's instant dislike of him, Ares actually came across as kind of reasonable, at least to me, during their conversation. Yet he sends them into what he knows has to be a trap to retrieve his shield, even though he's supposedly taken Poseidon's side. Any thoughts on what his motivation might have been? Just the fun of messing with them, or something more sinister?

10. We are past the midway point. Predictions for what's next?

Can’t be that simple. I think Hades may secretly have a half-blood child too, though I don’t know whether it’s a character that’s been introduced yet.
I think Percy needed more training, but there seems to be a big deadline to getting the theft resolved here... and it IS a children’s fantasy book, so. :D

7. The trio isn't off to their best start. Battling all 3 Furies, destroying a bus, losing all their money and backpacks, followed by stumbling into Auntie M's. If is your first time reading, are you enjoying it?

The Medusa thing was very obvious, but nonetheless entertaining, and I loved the “impertinence” of Percy mailing her head.
The fast pacing is, I think, a good match for the overall tone of the book. I mean, if this were a serious book I would want it to go slower and have more emotional build, but since it’s more of a comedy the pace is fine.

Again, this gets to the "serious vs. humorous" question, as well as the book being a children’s fantasy. In real life I would think that any parent should help their 12 year old kid but given the context of this story I think it makes more sense for Percy to have his “hero quest” with minimal adult intervention. Or, well, godly intervention!

9. Ares buys them lunch and asks for a favor. Despite Percy's instant dislike of him, Ares actually came across as kind of reasonable, at least to me, during their conversation. Something more sinister, though I don’t know what. Maybe Ares is simply using Percy as a matter of convenience because Percy is the only known child of the “Big Three” at this point? I enjoyed Ares as a character during their lunch though.

10. We are past the midway point. Predictions for what's next?

The kids will make it to California, surely. And I think Percy will meet his father. Other than that, I don’t know!

yes that was good.

I'm reading mythology books to my son at the moment (he is almost 5 and has become obsessed) so it was good timing with this this book!!

Yes!!! I hate it when they throw in a romantic situation for the movie when it's totally unnecessary. That's definitely an advantage for his being so young in the book.

Yeah, I'm surprised that Chiron is so sure- nothing is that straightforward in these types of stories! I don't remember if the movie veers from the book or not, but if it's the same, then I know who really took it and who the friend who betrays him is. But already the Ares thing wasn't in the movie and it's been ages since I first read this book. But yes, the training did feel a little rushed, although I think he was there for at least a week, maybe more. Because the deadline was a month away at the beginning and then about 10 days away when they start their quest, so maybe 2.5 weeks of training.

7. The trio isn't off to their best start. Battling all 3 Furies, destroying a bus, losing all their money and backpacks, followed by stumbling into Auntie M's. There's a lot of destruction, but that's not surprising considering the high level of powers around. Again, I've seen the movie recently so I knew who Auntie M. was, and I'm not sure how quickly I would have guessed it- but probably faster than Percy! He was pretty slow on the draw! I'm definitely enjoying the pace- it's really nice to have an action book that doesn't drag!

8. Percy battles Echidna and a Chimera at the top of the Gateway Arch then dives into the river. The fact that water instantly heals him is turning out to be quite the helpful trick. Well, that's a tricky situation because I think Poseidon wants to help but is being closely watched by Zeus, so he can't do too much. I think he can give Percy little boosts when he's in water but not so much going out of his way to help him on land.

It could have simply been selfish- he knew the trap was there, hence he didn't want to get caught himself, and he figured Percy would figure it out. Of course it's possible that he's playing both sides and wanted to hurt Percy, but not necessarily.

10. We are past the midway point. Predictions for what's next?
Again, no point in me making predictions:)

I agree, the pace is great, especially for younger readers who can get bored easily

Deanna | 3556 comments Chapters 1-8

1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?
I've read all of Riordan's young adult books. It's been a few years since I read the original series, which is still my favorite, so I decided to do a reread.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?
Yes. It was horribly done. They should have stayed closer to the book plot and not changed the ages of the characters.

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!
Percy is one of my favorite characters. I love his relationship with his mother and her support of him. He's a loyal friend and always tries to do the right thing to the best of his ability.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?
I think it is possible because of how she disappeared in a flash of light instead of dying like a normal human.

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?
Higher expectations and harder challenges.

Chapters 9 - 15

I didn't believe Hades made since the first time I read the book because he didn't have any children at the camp. It quickly becomes apparent through Percy's dreams that there js an outside player that no one is considering. The Oracle is just creepy, and I shared Percy's aggravation at her cryptic message.

I guessed it was Medusa when Grover spotted his uncle. I think the pacing is just right. The master bolt is so important that I expect everyone to be coming after it.

I want him to do more, but I think he is doing the best he can with the restrictions about not directly interfering or showing favorites.

I think he is self-centered and doesn't want to get caught in another of Haphaetes' traps. I find his actions suspicious at this point but not sinister.

10. We are past the midway point. Predictions for what's next?
No point in making predictions since I've read the book previously.

Definitely loving the lack of love triangles and everyone constantly drooling over each other. It's very refreshing to read a book that focuses on the adventure and friendship :)

I was sooo surprised by Percy's age when I first decided to pick up the book after seeing the movie. They all looked to be 15 or 16 in the films, so when I read the first couple of chapters and it said "12 year old Percy Jackson does this and that" I was like "W H O A. This kid is only 12???" It blew my mind haha~

6. Chiron seems pretty sure that the lightening thief is Hades. Do you think it's really that simple? Any thoughts on who else it may be? A friend will betray him, and he'll ultimately fail to save what matters most. Sounds pretty ominous.

I don't think anything is ever as simple as it seems. Not sure who might've stolen it. Maybe a character that's yet to be introduced, or a character that hasn't had much development yet to keep us in the dark? I don't want to think on it too much, because I might accidentally remember stuff from the movie and I don't want that. I'm enjoying not knowing much so the book can be a surprise. For once I'm thankful for my awful memory.

Ideally it would've been great for Percy to have more training, but they just didn't have enough time, so I get why he had to just take what he could get and roll with it. The Summer Solstice is approaching pretty swiftly.

The Oracle was creepy, I definitely wouldn't want to be stuck in a room with it. A friend that will betray him could either be one of his two traveling companions, or someone he trusts at camp. So maybe Luke or Chiron, I don't know. As for failing to save what matters most, that depends. If it's what matters most to him personally, I'd say that means his mom. But if it means what matters most for humanity and the gods, it could mean the bolt, the fate of Olympus, the entire world, who knows how grand this story's supposed to be haha.

7. The trio isn't off to their best start. Battling all 3 Furies, destroying a bus, losing all their money and backpacks, followed by stumbling into Auntie M's. Were you surprised by who Auntie M turned out to be or had you figured it out? Percy mailing her head to Mt. Olympus was kind of funny. There isn't much lag-time in this novel, it's pretty much nonstop. Are you enjoying the pace? If is your first time reading, are you enjoying it?

The moment they saw that one statue of the little kid with an oddly terrified/shocked expression, that's when I realized M was Medusa. I like how she was introduced in the book, had a nice amount of tension and buildup. Don't really remember how it was done in the movie. Percy mailing her head to Olympus was so bold and funny of him.

I LOVE the pacing of this book so much! Lots of action and interesting events. Even though the book goes at a quick pace, it doesn't feel rushed. Love a book that doesn't drag on, it makes for such an easy read.

Loved that scene so much.
Sometimes I feel like Poseidon should be helping him a lot more than he is. But then again he is pretty tied up right now and they're on the brink of war, so he's not in the best position. So at least he's managing to do something.

I loved that he knowingly sent Percy into a trap to do fetchwork for him just because he didn't want to put up with the trap himself, that's so cheeky and I enjoyed it so much. I didn't really see anything sinister about it. If it was a lethal trap, maybe I'd think he was out to get Percy, but it wasn't much of anything, so I think he was just being selfish.
But the fact that Ares would show up in the first place seems like a big deal, so maybe he'll return in the future and play a bigger role?

10. We are past the midway point. Predictions for what's next?

I can't even begin to guess, I'm just enjoying everything as it comes to me :)

1. Have you read anything by Riordan before? Why did you decide to join this read?
This is the first book that I’ve read by Riordan but I had always liked the sound of the PJ series. I sense the issue with a lot of YA series is that they will always now be compared to Harry Potter. I appreciate that to fully enjoy these you have to get out of that frame of mind instantly and take each book for what it is. It’s the usual genre of books that I enjoy and can sense that it’s a pretty easy read at the rate I’m going through it.

2. The movie doesn't have the greatest ratings and reviews online. Have you seen it?
I haven’t seen the movie for PJ and hadn’t really intended on seeing it until I had read the book. Again, if you were to compare them to anything from the Harry Potter series then they have a lot to live up to. I wasn’t aware that it had bad reviews but then you can’t always take other people’s opinions as gospel.

3. Thoughts on Percy as a character? He's not really the typical hero!
I’m finding it quite hard to judge Percy at the moment. Riordan doesn’t give particularly strong descriptions of any of the characters so you’re left to your own interpretation of them. Given that he’s just had to witness some pretty strange things within the last few days he may not be truly coming into himself just yet. He’s certainly not coming across as an unlikeable character but seems a bit timid at the moment.

4. He doesn't really grieve for his mother as she is in the Underworld so "She's not gone". Do you think it is possible for her to return?
I suspect that his mother will reappear at some point in the story, most likely in spirit form. We haven’t had much explanation of how this works yet but the fact that she vanished probably means there is more to it. I would like to think that although Percy’s father is Poseidon; his mother is also someone of great importance, making Percy more than a demigod.

5. "Like he's "Big Three" material,' Clarisse said as she pushed me towards one of the toilets." And Chiron announces Poseidon is his father at the end of this section. Any guesses as to what this means for Percy?
I think that there will be a quest that Percy has to go on that somehow ties into whatever has been stolen. It’s obvious that children from the big three aren’t welcome and this is why there is an extra effort to kill Percy. I’m not sure what the quest will be or who it will involve but I assume that Percy will want Grover there with him to allow him to prove himself and Annabelle as she seems to be a main character.

Something in the back of my mind suspects that it’s Chiron or Luke that is behind it all. Chiron had been watching Percy for years, had his own predictions from the Oracle, encouraged Percy to go on the quest and may have deliberately let him overhear him discussing subjects with Grover. Luke may still be bitter about Thalia’s death and want to set up Grover. Hades may have something to do with stealing the bolt, but something just niggles me about the other two. We already know that there is a traitor in the camp and it may very well be one of them. I’d like to think it’s too obvious that the ‘friend’ who will betray him is going to be Annabeth or Grover.

I hadn’t worked out that Aunty M was Medusa, but was quite happy when it was revealed. I enjoy things to do with Ancient Greek history but my knowledge isn’t as strong as it could be and didn’t realise that Perseus was the one that originally defeated her. I enjoyed the part where he mailed her head back to Olympus – although found it a bit childish/silly that it was simply a postal address to the gods! – but can see that it was a powerful move on his part.

The book certainly moves at a quick pace and doesn’t leave you much time to appreciate some of the tasks/situations that the trio are getting into. There isn’t a great deal of character development and the only real dialog between characters seems to be hints and suggestions at the larger picture which will all come together at the end.

I am enjoying the book as the backstory around Ancient Greece is something I’m interested in, I like the fantasy element but as it all feels a bit rushed there doesn’t feel to be much opportunity to actually fully understand the characters.

I’m unsure how Percy is now 12 years old and had never realised before how good a bath/shower made him feel!? I’m perhaps looking into this a bit too much! I’d like to think that Poseidon is doing a lot to help Percy and this is perhaps why he never picked up on the powers/energy he receives from there previously.

I’m not sure if this will have any other involvement in the story line just yet or whether it was just an opportunity for Riordan to get another interaction with a god into the plot. The trio seem to have nothing but bad luck and get into quirky situations so this may just be a further reason to do this.

10. We are past the midway point. Predictions for what's next?

They’re definitely running out of time so something quite dramatic is going to have to happen for them to reach the underworld in the next 24 hours in the storyline. I suspect they’re going to get assistance from someone to speed up their travels.

12. In addition to his control with and in water, Percy is the only one to break through the magic of the Lotus Hotel, he talks to the zebra......what do think it says about what else Percy may be capable of? His potential as a demi-god?

13. Ares, Luke, and Kronos wind up being behind the thefts and the plot to start a war between Poseidon and Zeus. Were you surprised by any of these revelations or had you mostly figured it out? Zeus doesn't believe Kronos was ultimately behind everything. Do you think that's it or there's more to come?

14. I'll admit, I gotta kick out of Percy calling Zeus & Hades "Uncle". He also finally meets Poseidon. Were you happy with their meeting? Disappointed? It's not as simple as getting it from Hades. He will have trials if you will along the way. Such as the Furys, Medusa, or Ares shield. The thunderbolt could be in the hands of a Kindly One, a friend, or I think most likely, another God that is not Hades. When he saw the Oracle, I was wondering if the friend is Grover or Annabeth, and if he'll almost fail to save his mom.

7. The trio isn't off to their best start. Battling all 3 Furies, destroying a bus, losing all their money and backpacks, followed by stumbling into Auntie M's. If is your first time reading, are you enjoying it?

I guessed it was Medusa only because I had seen the movie. The book and the movie are different in many ways so far, so I don't rely on my memory of the movie for what will happen in the book. This scene with the statues reminded me of Narnia too. I'm loving the fast pace of the book. It makes it very hard to put the book down. This is my first time reading the book.

I feel like Poseidon does okay sometimes, then at others, he could really step up to the plate. It seems to me like Percy needs him more than he is getting his support.

I think his motivation could have been to test Percy, but also maybe selfish to get his shield back. However, I do wonder if Ares set the trap himself for some reason as a test and lied to Percy.

10. We are past the midway point. Predictions for what's next?

I think the trio will have to face maybe one or two more Kindly ones before they get to Los Angeles. I don't think Hades has the thunderbolt with all the hinting going on, such as the Furys. Mrs. Dodds asked, "Where is it?" I think another God has it that is in Olympus. Maybe they left with it. It could be a puzzle for the trio. I'm not going by the movie since it's so different from the book.

Chapters 16 - 22

11. The kids find themselves in a timeslip at the Lotus Hotel for 5 days, where there's tons of games, food, etc. Everything to keep kids happy. My daughter pointed out to me, it's been awhile for me and I'll admit I didn't catch it, that this is a reference to The Odyssey and the Lotus Eaters. (She actually said there are lots of references/similarities to The Odyssey so I might be in for yet another reread lol). Have you noticed any other references/similarities that I missed? To any other stories?

I never read the Odyssey in full and I'm not very familiar with Greek myths, so no:)

12. In addition to his control with and in water, Percy is the only one to break through the magic of the Lotus Hotel, he talks to the zebra......what do think it says about what else Percy may be capable of? His potential as a demi-god?
Well, he should theoretically be stronger than the other demi-gods since he's the son of a Big Three. And he should be able to do a watered-down version of anything his father can do.

Well, since I've seen the movie recently, I knew about Luke, but they totally changed the plot in regards to Ares and Kronos- they weren't in the movie at all! But I suspected it was Kronos pretty early on- not sure if I remembered it from reading the book six years ago or not. I didn't suspect Ares at first but it became obvious when Percy felt a weight in the backpack. I'm sure Kronos will come up again in the next books.

14. I'll admit, I gotta kick out of Percy calling Zeus & Hades "Uncle". He also finally meets Poseidon. Were you happy with their meeting? Disappointed? Would you have liked to see something else happen? At the end, Poseidon sends Percy the head of Medusa. Were you satisfied with the conclusion of Percy's mom story? Percy decides to go home rather than stay at Camp Half-Blood. Wise choice?
I was happy with their meeting, but I think it's silly that Poseidon can't "show him favor" just because he's his son- I think that's the best reason to show favor... Silly Olympian politics. I'm glad Percy is taking the chance to spend some quality time with his mom, but I think he'll encounter monsters pretty often.

15. What were your final thoughts? Did you like it? If it was a reread, did you change your mind? Any plans to continue the series? See the movie?
I liked it. It was quick and fun. I had previously only read through book 2 even though I liked it, so I'm hoping to finish out the series this time. Even though the movies are pretty different, I still like them.
