Dawn (caveatlector) First: I'm just moving this thread from General Discussion to Looking for a Book as it fits better.
Second: Welcome Vaelin, please remember to add book links in any future posts and I'm sure you'll find stacks of books for those interests in the regular threads.

And Third: My ideas for your interests would be, The Whale Road by Robert Low for Vikings
The Last Kingdom or Azincourt by Bernard Cornwell or Outlaw by Angus Donald for medieval
For Ottoman Empire I'd go with The Janissary Tree by Jason Goodwin (FYI: this is a mystery)
And Byzantine would be A Place Called Armageddon by C.C. Humphreys or The Mosaic of Shadows by Tom Harper

Good timing, Vaelin! Such a coincidence. As happy pointed out, in the last week I did up a 'must read' in the genre list for this very reason. For people discovering the genre to get a good taste of a lot of the kinds of Historical Fiction this group caters to.

I will soon be setting up a thread which includes a must read list from my two fellow mods as well. It will include my list and a list from each of them.
I'll post a link to that thread here in this topic as soon as the new thread is up and running.

Eileen Iciek | 553 comments You could check out Gordon Doherty's books, Strategos - Born in the Borderlands (Strategos, #1) by Gordon Doherty and Strategos Rise of the Golden Heart (Strategos, #2) by Gordon Doherty , which deal with Byzantium. He does a good job covering the period before the rise of Alexios Comnenos.

Also, there is Ann Perry's book, The Sheen on the Silk by Anne Perry which takes place about 200 years after Gordon's books.

Terri | 19576 comments Here we have it. The brand new thread I was speaking about that gives ten selections from all three group moderators.
The three lists, with ten books on each list plus two alternatives, was inspired by new members with needs exactly like yours, Vaelin.

I hope the lists help you out.

Jane | 3480 comments As far as Vikings: The Long Ships is granddaddy of all Viking books and a real classic in that subgenre!
