Afro Book Club discussion

Hi all,

I hope it's okay for me to post this here. As part of my MA, a Zimbabwean classmate and I decided to host a dialogue for Southern Africans living in Vancouver to discuss issues such as identity and belonging. This looks so interesting. I look forward to reading the dialogue. What typ of MA are you working on? Although, I would think that with your reading list you would be writing a dissertation for your doctorate!

Thank you, Leslie! My MA is in International and Intercultural Communication. Haha, I had initially thought of doing a doctorate but now I wonder whether academia and I mix:)

Does it have to do with being an independent scholar? It seems that you love knowledge and study. Sometimes the culture of academia functions as elitist and exclusionary and that's a turn-off for many. I always admire people who have the stamina for doctoral work; but for myself, I've been afraid that it would stifle my imagination and creativity rather than foster it. Ramblings...! Anyway. International and Intercultural Communication sounds rich and progressive. I hope you're enjoying your program:)

Definitely! I went back to school because I feel I need guidance in my studies sometimes, and it's great to learn new perspectives from classmates and profs, but at the same time I find academia to be slightly restrictive at times.I do understand the need for some of the red tape but I feel it can also kill or retard ideas/projects. Also, I'd like any research that I do to be able to benefit more people, not just the education "elite." And yes, I completely agree with you that too much academia might stifle creativity. One of my friends who is a PhD said her studies killed her love of reading, eek! And thank you, I am enjoying my programme:)

Zikomo kwambiri:) (I just checked your profile and noticed you're from Zambia so I'm assuming you speak Nyanja:)). I'm from Malawi. I love your comment and I so agree with you, Southern Africa is normally left out of the discourse.
