Robert Dallmann (robert_dallmann) | 1605 comments I am very interested in this important Bible person. Jesus' High Priestly ministry is patterned after the Order of Melchisedec, so I know He must be important. Therefore I wrote this book...

Melchisedec: A Character Study

This forum is intended to discuss Biblical attributes ascribed to Melchizedek.

Rod Horncastle So a Priest just pops up and accepts tithes?

Abraham (the Father of Faith) gives tithes to Melchisedec (a New Covenant Priest).

Does this say something about what our giving should look like today?

message 4: by Rod (new)

Rod Horncastle No. It says that this was a very important Priest.

So the Father of Faith giving tithes to the New Covenant Priest, that Jesus is patterned after. Is not meaningful to you?

Hebrews 7:9-10

9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

This aspect is SO important that the author of Hebrews goes to great lengths to point out that...

* Levi (the rightful recipient of tithes)
* Paid tithes to Melchisedec (by Law NOT a legitimate recipient of tithes)
* While Levi was NOT YET BORN (and would not be for FOUR generations)

That would be like me saying that I paid my great great grandfather's mortgage, while I was not yet born.

How do you arrive at the conclusion that this is NOT relevant?

message 6: by Rod (new)

Rod Horncastle Slow down.

Hebrews 7:18 hmmm...

This at first seems ALL about Jesus and His priesthood. Tithes aren't the focus or even a point really.

message 7: by Rod (new)

Rod Horncastle Why would you say "it's not meaningful to you."

That's rude Robert. Is this how you teach , by insulting those participating? You should be ashamed of your self righteousness and intellectual arrogance.

This issue of Christ is very meaningful. But remember: this is from the letter to the Hebrews. I'm not a Hebrew. Are You?

My response: Agreed tithes are NOT the focus. But why in the world would anyone say something like...

Levi paid tithes to Melchisedec when he was four generations away from even being born????

Who says anything like that? Unless it is important.

My response: Are you telling me that the Book of Hebrews is NOT Scripture?

If it is Scripture (IT IS) then...

2 Timothy 3:16 - " All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"

Robert Dallmann (robert_dallmann) | 1605 comments Rod wrote: "Slow down. Hebrews 7:18 hmmm... This at first seems ALL about Jesus and His priesthood. Tithes aren't the focus or even a point really."

My response: Are you aware that Melchisedec receiving tithes from Abraham happened BEFORE the Law?

Thus the Hebrews 7:18-19 are NOT speaking of disannulling the event in Genesis 14!

message 11: by Rod (new)

Rod Horncastle The letter to the Hebrews is exactly that. More specifically the Hebrews of the 1st century. These issues very much apply directly to THEM. We are honored to listen in. Yes it is God's Word - to them.

Keep on topic Robert. Even the Tribe of Levi has currently been disbanded and forgotten. But all this will apply again - to the Jews.

message 12: by Rod (new)

Rod Horncastle Good point that it happened before the law. Under which covenant then?

Do gentiles even have a high priest? Did Noah?

My response: Thanks for LOTS of OPINIONS. As for me, I will stick with the Word of God...

2 Timothy 3:16 - " All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"

God says ALL Scripture is profitable for doctrine, etc.

Rod says NOT ALL Scripture is profitable for doctrine, etc.

Robert Dallmann (robert_dallmann) | 1605 comments Rod wrote: "Good point that it happened before the law. Under which covenant then? Do gentiles even have a high priest? Did Noah?"

My response: Jesus was patterned after Melchisedec... which covenant is Jesus a High Priest of?

Which covenant must Melchisedec be a High Priest of?

Robert Dallmann (robert_dallmann) | 1605 comments Hebrews 7:2-3

2 and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever .

So, Abraham gave tithes to Melchisedec, and that Melchisedec resembles the Son of God, and that Melchisedec is a priest FOREVER .

How is the Melchisedec Who Abraham gave tithes to a continual "forever" priest?

"I won this book via a good-reads giveaway contest.

This book is an interesting comparison of Melchisedec and Jesus Christ.

The author sheds light on this mysterious character in the Bible, Melchisedec is only mentioned a mere handful of times in the Bible, 2x in the OT and in one entire chapter In Hebrews in the NT.

I would recommend all to read this.

Many times we remember the stories of the Biblical historical figures that are constantly spoken of (Abraham, Lot, Noah, Moses, Jesus, John, Luke, Mark, Mary, Samaritan woman, etc ) yet we forget the roles of other individuals whom were of significance."

Hebrews 7:3 - "Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually."

WOW!

Robert Dallmann (robert_dallmann) | 1605 comments Here is the latest review of Melchisedec: A Character Study on Amazon...

Eye-opening! - February 14, 2019 - Format: Kindle Edition

I have to admit, previously I glanced over the character of Melchisedec in the Bible, mainly due to my lack of understanding. But this study makes the case that he was not just a “mere king” but the pre-incarceration of Jesus. The author uses scripture to clearly show the servanthood, and the continual and consecrated life of our High Priest.
