hi everybody and welcome to august's THEMED READ! the theme chosen was SPACE OPERA.

according to my close acquaintance TV Tropes,
Space Opera refers to works set in a spacefaring civilization, usually, though not always, set in the future, specifically the far future. Technology is ubiquitous and secondary to the story. Space opera has an epic character to it: the universe is big, there are usually many sprawling civilizations and empires, there are political conflicts and intrigue. The action will range part of a solar system, at least, and possibly a whole galaxy or more than one. It frequently takes place in a Standard Sci Fi Setting. It has a romantic element which distinguishes it from most Hard Science Fiction: big love stories, epic space battles, oversized heroes and villains, awe-inspiring scenery, and insanely gorgeous men and women.
Fun!

the space opera that won our decidedly controversial poll was the dependable and prolific Peter F. Hamilton's FALLEN DRAGON. it is a rare standalone novel by the author. I am looking forward to reading it!

Lena I'm about 23% into the audiobook. It's been ok, many separate stories that are not yet related. The story of the lost civilization in the nebula properly creeped me out - especially since it kind of reminded me of what I'd like to do with my life. Just boom then wait it out, then boom some more. Mostly kidding, mostly.

I am looking forward to understanding what you mean by "boom"!

Lena Lol, it's more fun to be vague than use spoiler tags.

Lena 35% in. Lawrence receives a burn few could recover from (not literal fire but damn). The stories haven't come together yet and are barely sci-fi, just set in the future with inserted tales of Ring World, which is kind of mythological.

Lena There are over 2200 members of this group and 25 actively voted for this book. Whose else will read this with Mark and me?

Lena 36% Ok some of the threads have come together... or I wasn't paying enough attention to names, lol. Audiobooks let you drift a bit. Ok, 17 hours to go!

Mickey | 623 comments I somewhat want to read this book. I have never read a book by this author. But when I saw the page count of 800 pages, it got to me. Time is my enemy these days and it takes me forever to do anything these days.

If I do read this book it will take me more than a month.

Lena 43% in. Took a look at the Wikipedia synopsis and I have definitely not been playing close enough attention. I had thought they were multiple stories of multiple people when it's really just the one guy at multiple time periods. Sorry if I lead anyone astray. It all makes way more sense now.

ha!

Lena 54% in. I need to take a moment and say that it was EVIL of Lawrence's girlfriend to secretly feed him meat for a week. Lawrence is a life long vegan. He puked and then politely broke up with her. Buddy, if that had been me there would have been NO politeness to speak of!!!

I'm not getting to this until next weekend, when long flights will make this the perfect carry-on baggage.

I wonder if the other 24 people who voted for this book will be weighing in (LOL).

Lena Audiobook! Merely 26 hours and 31 minutes. That's barely over a day. :)

Mickey | 623 comments Do those audio books cover the entire word for word in a book? Is it like an expanded 2 hour movie that cannot compare to the book. I have seen several movies and they do not do justice to the book.

In the next two months, gardening and canning will be out of my way, hopping more time to read.

Mickey | 623 comments Ok, I'll download the book and start reading tonight. Maybe perhaps I'll be done by Halloween :)

message 19: by Lena (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lena At 26 hours I certainly hope so! But I didn't whispersynch, this book was audio only for me. That's why I wandered a bit too much at first, lol.

Mickey | 623 comments I typically read about 20 pages an hour of an average written novel. Most of my reading time is around two hours before bedtime. Perhaps at best 100 pages per week of a typical novel.

Most of my reading at night is non fiction, mostly books on baking/cooking, special diet (Hemochromatosis) and meal planning for the days ahead. I am becoming a very good cook/baker. If I could buy in the stores, I would, professional bakers cost too much.

Fallen Dragon by Peter Hamilton is now downloaded.

Mickey | 623 comments Wait a minute, page count is all over the map depending on the edition of Fallen Dragon, From 620 to 808 pages? Are they the same book, text size, or is it like heavy editing somewhere? Like big editing differences from Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land?

Lena That stuff drives me nuts too Mickey.

Lena Does that mean you are reading it?

message 25: by Mickey (new) - added it

Mickey | 623 comments I have started reading it. So far I have this unusual desire for a prosthetic arm that can fire toxic darts. Or was that something that fits over an existing arm, since the arm was slightly larger than his other arm?

Lena I think it's pretty smooth Mickey but definitely an add on.

Gary (gary1123) | 1 comments I finished the book and reviewed it a few days ago. I thought it started really well, faded a bit and left me skimming. Honestly, the younger Lawrence sections were some of my favorites and it seemed like an example of Hamilton's characterizing skills at their best.

P. K. Torrens | 4 comments I've been meaning to read fallen dragon for a while. Because Hamilton rocks my world. Made the mistake of starting too like the lightning... taking a while with episodes of re-reading to appreciate its complexity.

I'm about two-thirds of the way in and am enjoying it. Some issues here and there, but mainly a lot of fun. Loved the stories of the prince's adventures. Lots more that I want to say but I think I'll save it for later.

okay, finished it a few days back.

enjoyable! that's my main takeaway.

there was a lot that I didn't care for - strange characterization missteps, dumb coincidences, etc.

but overall I appreciate how Hamilton slowed himself down for this book. a lot more contemplative than I'm used to with him. all of his ideas on ambition and exploration and his balanced viewpoint on the various goals of revolutionaries, corporate mercenary grunts, the clones, etc... fascinating.

the central hook of the "Skins" was very well-done but I'm glad they didn't actually dominate the story.

my favorite part was actually the story-within-the-story of the Galactic Prince flying about in his spaceship trying to find new meaning in life, to bring back home to his girl and his world. loved all of that.

Lena wrote: "Just boom then wait it out, then boom some more..."

I finally know what you are talking about! that was literally my favorite sequence in the book. tragic and strangely beautiful.

Lena Yes, it was memorable!
