Ellen | 3570 comments After a heartbreaking tragedy brings Maisie Dobbs to the brink of despair, she leaves Canada for what she hopes will be a restorative visit to India. A letter from her stepmother warns Maisie that Maisie's father is getting older and that he would like to spend some time with his daughter. Reluctantly Maisie boards a ship bound for England but as the ship nears home, Maisie becomes increasingly reluctant to return to the life she once knew. Impulsively, Maisie leaves the ship at Gibraltar. The city is rife with refugees fleeing the Spanish Civil War and Maisie soon becomes embroiled in a murder thought to have been perpetrated by one of the fleeing Spaniards. The victim was a photographer and member of the Jewish community. Maisie believes there is much more to the killing than that of a random act; she believes the photographer may have taken pictures that someone does not want anyone to see.

This is the 11th book in the Maisie Dobbs series and although the setting is different and exotic the story was rather bland. The specter of WWII on the horizon lends intrigue and many spies and secret meetings to the novel. I just wasn't very engaged with this one although I am still a true-blue Maisie fan.

Jgrace | 3995 comments I agree. This wasn't my favorite. The next one is more suspenseful but it has an unlikely plot. The most recent book was much better. (I'm also a true -blue Maisie fan)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I'm having trouble imagining Maisie living anywhere but England! I didn't realize she didn't stay there throughout the series.
