I just realized that we need to pick some new reads! It is time to start nominations for our group reads for Fall 2017.

What would you like to read for discussion? I am opening this up to anything , so feel free to nominate any book you would like, new releases, older releases, old classics, popular books, thought provoking books, non-fiction books, etc.

We will read the top vote receivers, whatever they may be!

If you nominate a book, please be willing and available to lead the discussion if the book is selected.

Lincoln in the Bardo

message 4: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4587 comments I just added that one to my TBR list. I would support that as our fall read.

I would also like to read it, so also nominate it for the Fall read.

message 6: by Petra (new)

Petra John Irving writes great novels. I'd support that one, too.

LOL! So we have 4 votes for Cider House rules so far? Looks like that will be one of our picks. (I'd like to read it too!)

I'd like to pick the next two group read though so if anyone else has anything else they would like to throw out as a nomination for second read please post. :-)

Pam | 3 comments I am new to the group so forgive me if this has already been chosen.

Shogun by James Clavell
Thanks!

Sorry
But cider house rules has also been sitting on my shelf for years.

Petra Shōgun was incredible. I read the whole ASian saga in my early 20s and loved them all.
I just saw that there's a sixth book in the saga. I only read the five.

ETA: I am not seconding this because I don't know if I can commit to the read. It would depend on when the read happens. I have a huge work project coming up in October/November, which will limit my time.

Well since we have only had 3 nominations, and one is a chunky, I think we have our next 2 group reads, and our next chunky read!

So our next group reads will be:

The Cider House Rules by John Irving, leader Jennifer W.
Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders, leader Irene

and after the current chunky read of Vanity Fair finishes, our next chunky will be
Shōgun by James Clavell, leader Pam.

How does that work for everyone?

Jennifer, would you like to do Cider House first? When would you like to start (leaving it up to you, no rush, no hurry, we are flixible!)

Petra These are all great choices. I hope to join in at least two. Shogun would be a reread.....but it's been a long time and I remember it with fondness; maybe time for a reread....will depend on my schedule when we read it. I'm a slower reader; 2 group reads at once may not be do-able for me. I'll be watching the schedules.

Irene | 4587 comments Are we reading Cider House and Lincoln at the same time or back to back?

Cinder House and Lincoln would be back to back, since they are both group reads. :-)

message 15: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4587 comments OK, since more people voted for Cider House, we should do that one first. Is there enough interest in Lincoln in the Bardo? Other than my nomination, does anyone else want to read it. I don't want to do a group read of one person.

I'd like to read Lincoln, Irene. I thought it sounded very interesting. So we will have at least two!

I actually ordered copies of all three of these books yesterday, so will be ready to read and participate in all three! They look like great picks!

message 17: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4587 comments OK, as long as I am not reading Lincoln alone.

message 18: by Petra (new)

Petra I hope to join in, too. I'm thinking of going with the audio, if possible, to help fit these all in. I've heard conflicting thoughts on the audio, though, so am waffling on that format.

message 19: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I have to pick up my copy from the library. Once I get a peak at it, I'll pick a start date and get a reading schedule up.

Petra, I love audio books! I had hoped my library would have an audio verion of Cider House, but they don't. Very rarely do I get a clunker, almost all the audio books I've listened to have been great to excellent!

message 20: by Juliette (new)

Juliette | 40 comments I will join you in reading Lincoln, it sounds like an amazing book to read.

Hi Pam, would you like to start working on a reading schedule for Shogun? We can start that one any time!

It appears we have lost Pam, who nominated Shogun. Is anyone else intererted in reading/leading this one, (it is a LONG one), or should we pass on this one and move on to new nominations?

message 23: by Petra (new)

Petra I will be finishing Proust in December, so my concentration will be on that.
Shogun is good but very long and I'm not sure I've got the time to dedicate to it right now.
I'm happy with new nominations.

message 24: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4587 comments Shogun was never my vote. I would have read it to support the group, but I am happy to pass on it.

message 25: by Juliette (new)

Juliette | 40 comments I am happy to move on to something else - wasn’t going to read Shogun

Thanks ladies. We will pass on Shogun then, and I will start a new thread for nominations. Ww will plan on giving everyone a break till the end of the year, to get through the holidays, and we will start a new group read in the New Year 2018.
