Michael Weitz | 6 comments Have you read novels with chess as a theme? Or at least part of the story? If you like mysteries, you might want to check out the award-winning Ray Gordon series. He's a chess teacher and there are real games featured in the books. And guess who the author is! :)

I hope you don't mind my adding this here, but if you're interested...

Randy (rkjulian) I really liked The Flanders Panel, and Lisa, but there don't seem to be that many good chess themed books out there. I have not read The Defense, but the movie was good.

Professor | 2 comments Recently out, an amusing chess-themed novel titled Spurious Games, available in hardback, paperback and as an ebook. It is a literary novel of ideas masquerading as a murder mystery dealing with a serial killer running amok in cornish chess and taunting the detectives with chess-related clued. A website has been launched supporting the novel and exploring some of its themes called spuriousgames.org. Please give it a look

message 8: by Robert Steven (new)

Robert Steven Goldstein | 2 comments ENEMY QUEEN is a novel chock full of chess. Also featuring deliciously wicked humor, artful eroticism, and a bit of intrigue, the book is an exhilarating romp set in a North Carolina college town.

When Stanley Berman, a New York attorney, is appointed Chief Counsel at a North Carolina University, he opts to share a house with fellow local chess champion Thomas McClellan, a professor in the school’s English Department. They spend their evenings drinking wine, playing chess, and lamenting their ineptitude with women.

Then the Professor hatches a scheme to bring a young woman into the house, insisting that as a creative writing teacher, such women find him alluringly subversive and artistic.

The Counselor is dubious but persuaded nonetheless—much to his detriment.

The articulate but bumbling Counselor and Professor find themselves outwitted at every turn by Victoria, a young woman who is clever, inscrutable, and superb at finishing what she starts. She initiates passionate sexual encounters with the men, but as time goes on, what she demands in return becomes untenable. Her narcissism even begins to interfere with the men’s nightly chess games—and that’s too much to take.

When Victoria goes missing, John Watson, the county sheriff—and the Professor’s lifelong friend—feels compelled to open a murder investigation.

Fredrik Ekman | 2 comments Not to forget, The Chessmen of Mars. Technically speaking, it is not chess, but close enough.
