This information comes from Scotland A Concise History by Fitzroy Maclean (MaClean?).
William Wallace, a young Scottish knight from the south-west, was involved in a fight against some English soldiers in a market place at Lanark. With the help of a girl, who could of been his wife, he escaped the fight, but the girl was caught and sentence to death by the sheriff. Wallace sought revenge and killed the sheriff and became an outlaw. He became a leader within weeks against the English, which was brought forcibily to the English in September 1297. At Stirling Bridge in 1297 the Scottish beat the English army, and Wallace became the master of southern Scotland. Unfortunately, that was short lived since Wallace's most talented LT was killed at Stirling Bridge, which lead to Wallace's downfall. In July 1298 by the English in Falkirk, and Wallace never lead an army again. For 7 years Wallace avoid capture, but 1305 he was finally caught. He was brought to trail in Westminster Hall and was barbarously executed. For 7 years English armies ravaged Scotland without resistance.

When I was in primary school we were taught that William Wallace was a traitor who had it coming and Bruce was the true hero!!! (that is defo not the 'offical' version though, just i whim of the teacher I expect) I guess history is all in the telling, the truth is much more complicated than a good story.
Thinking about it, it probably says more about modern politics than times long ago1980's: troubles in NI "one man's freedom fighter is another's terrorist - we better be careful with this story"
1990's: New Scottish parliament, growing confidence in the nation "FREEEEDOOOOOOMMM....."
Today: "We are so past it - much more grown up now.....like, we are even good at tennis and a have a new bridge"
I guess Wallace was quite a challenging figure for those in authority- an average guy who took control and almost succeeded. Folk can take the story and interpret it how ever suits their needs.
Having said all that I have not even started the book yet (I have seen the film though :-) )
Do we know if Randall Wallace is some distant descendant of the big man?
Lmao. We have a new bridge. Lol you make me laugh.
Yes, he claims he is a distant relative and that is why he wrote this story.

ha, ha , that guy is pretty angry and has way too much time on his hands - I wonder how many times he had watched the movie!
I ordered this from the library and went to pick it up today - turns out the version they have is a simplified one for folks learning to read - it is only 35 pages long!!
