Welcome to your team for this week's read-a-thon Group Bingo Challenge. This thread is totally yours, so feel free to take time to learn more about the members of your team, discuss books and activities for the read-a-thon, and to plan your strategy for tackling the challenge.

Your goal is to complete most of the categories on the Bingo card (we'll be super impressed if you get them all!) by working with the members of your team. Some squares are a team effort (with a maximum per member contribution indicated between the brackets), others can be done individually to help push your team closer to their goal. Pay attention to the Bingo card. Matching colors can't be overlapped with one another. Black and yellow squares can overlap with any of the other squares.

We recommend you come together, as a team, and pick some team captains to help do re-caps and keep track of what your team is working on and what progress you've made. Mods will be exempt from this role.

As a team member, it will be your job to check in with your team as you start and complete tasks to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Hi Team Zombie! I'm really excited to get started with the readathon and looking forward to chatting with everyone and planning our team strategy.

I haven't done a group challenge before, so I'm not sure how the planning works, but I have a few books I've shortlisted to read next week (I don't expect to complete them all) which could be counted for different categories, depending which ones our team chooses to complete.

The Dogs of Riga could count for
* Published more than ten years ago
* An article in the title
* A book in a series
* A book for the AtY challenge

Death on the Nile could count for
* Published more than ten years ago
* An article in the title
* A book in a series

The Palm-Wine Drinkard could count for
* Published more than ten years ago
* An article in the title
* Written by a person of colour

Anne of the Island could count for
* Published more than ten years ago
* An article in the title
* A book in a series
* YA or children's book

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk could count for
* Published more than ten years ago
* Non-fiction

I have a book of poetry and book of short stories that I'm reading at the moment too, so I could also continue to the short stories and poetry categories if needed.

I'll hopefully be able to contribute 600 pages to the 4,000 page goal and read for one straight hour too.

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments PS - I spend quite a lot of time on Goodreads so I'm happy to help with keeping track of our team's progress if that's helpful. :-)

Usually it's helpful to use a basic board for tracking and then filling it in with x's or check marks as we progress. It would be helpful for someone to keep track of the accumulation of tasks (i.e. if someone says they finish a book then it could be added to the group's cumulative total).

Sounds great!

I have a list of books on my Kindle right now (keeping it on Airplane Mode so I don't lose them to the library). I can also adjust if needed and am able to read graphic novels and a short story. I don't have a great space right now for reading outside so won't be able to contribute there.

The Breakdown by B.A. Paris
- Article in the title
- Counting for the ATY challenge

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
- Red Cover
- Published 10+ years ago
- ATY challenge

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
- Young adult fiction
- ATY challenge

The Orphan's Tale by Pam Jenoff
- Article in the title
- ATY challenge

There's a few more so I can add them if I actually have time.

message 8: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Hi Zombies! :)

Looking forward to starting tomorrow.
Great to see others being enthusiastic too. Thanks for wanting to keep track Bryony.
If the weather stays like this it will be hard for me to read outside.

I want to start Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris tomorrow.
It has a green cover, not sure yet if it works for another category.

J Austill | 1135 comments You're doing a great job so far, Bryony. Your posts show that you'll make a fine leader.

I plan to do a post like Laura's once I get home. It will be good to see what tasks everyone can do so we can focus on those in less demand.

message 10: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments Hi team!

This is my first time doing the group challenge and I am excited to start. I can definitely help with the audiobook challenge as well as others.

It is hard to type on my phone but I will update with books for the week when I get home to help in the plannimg.

message 11: by Mel (last edited Sep 16, 2017 05:11PM) (new)

Mel | 177 comments Hey team! I've got a couple books on hold I'm hoping come in over the next day or two so I can use them for the challenge, and a few on my shelf I've been meaning to get to. Some on my shortlist:
Princeless, Vol. 1: Save Yourself by Jeremy Whitley
-Graphic novel
-Finish a story/book in one sitting

Not Your Sidekick by C.B. Lee
-YA book
-Read the rainbow (orange cover)
-Read a book in a series

Burning Kingdoms by Lauren DeStefano
-Read a book in a series
-ATY read

The Grownup by Gillian Flynn
-Short story/novella
-Finish a story/book in one sitting

Girl in Disguise by Greer Macallister
-ATY read

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
-Article in the title
-ATY read

I can also definitely help out with reading for an hour straight and the audiobook hours. I'll attempt reading outside as well if I can get in the time! (And the weather doesn't conflict too horribly!)

message 12: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1342 comments Hi all,
I'm looking forward to the challenge. I'm in Australia to the time zone is differen. I think I will do it 12 noon my time zone just so I don't have to start at 1.30am (and next Sunday is crazy busy for me so I'm better off finishing before then). I have a crazy busy week overally actually so I will do my best with reading.
I listen to audio to and from work - but that's only about 10 mins each way.

I guess it's easy for us all to recommend a book to the team. Although narrowing it down will be tough. I'm going to recommend Slip by David Estes. Dystopian and would fit in read a book in a series.

message 13: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments Go, Zombies!

Bryony, you'll be a great captain -- you are already! Thanks for being so organized. I'll spend a little time with the tasks and pair them up with my reading and report back tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

message 14: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1342 comments Ok so I'm going to be reading:
Sula
*person of colour
*ATY challenge
*published 10 years ago
*red cover
*a charcter travels

*Her Secret Desire
*ATY challenge
*purple cover
*new - it wasn't on my TBR but it was on my kindle so I decided to read it for the historical fiction book
*in a series

message 15: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments Also -- I don't understand what "overlapping" means -- is it that if I use a book for one category I can't use it for a non-overlapping category?

Bec, I'm curious to see what you think of Sula; I read it earlier this year and really liked Toni Morrison's writing style. (Hoping to read Beloved sometime this fall/winter since I've heard a lot of good about it.)

message 17: by Sophie (last edited Sep 16, 2017 10:38PM) (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Great job Bryony and thanks for stepping in to keep track!

I'm going to use the read-a-thon to tackle a massive book I received to review: The Darkness That Slept (1400 pages). And I just realised it wasn't on my TBR yet, so it could count for B1.
If we consider the cover being red, I can also contribute to the rainbow in I3.
The Darkness That Slept by Tristen Kozinski

I'm going to finish Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders by Neil Gaiman, and the last piece is a novella, so I could also contribute to B2.

I'm also going to start an audiobook (O4), but I don't know what yet. I could pick something to fill one case, please let me know what's missing!

I usually listen to my audiobooks while walking to and from work, so if we count this as reading outside, I can also contribute to I1.

I'm definitely going to read one hour straight (I5).

I just picked 2 manga from the library (O3).

Go Zombies!

message 18: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments Okay so I have the following:

Eleanor & Park
- Audiobook hours
- YA book

The Intercept
- Read the Rainbow (I think it would work for indigo, but let me know if it doesn't)
- Read a book in a series

X
- ATY challenge

I can also read for an hour straight and probably read outside.

message 19: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments The Intercept (Jeremy Fisk, #1) by Dick Wolf does look indigo!

message 20: by Marina (last edited Sep 17, 2017 11:53PM) (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Hello zombies,
The day has just started here in Denmark and I'm hoping to do a lot of reading today and hopefully most of the week.
Bryony, you're super organised so I'm more than fine with you as team captain.

My reading plans for the next week looks like this so far:
FinishedFirefly Lane (from page 300)
- blue cover
- a character travels

Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body (from page 102)
- non-fiction
- a person of color
- an article in the title

Neverwhere (starting this week)
- published 10 years ago
- 6 hours audiobook

Wolf Hall (starting this week)
- A book for the ATY challenge

If I'm going bananas this week I might also read:
American Gods (starting this week)
- a book for the ATY challenge

The Mysterious Affair at Styles (starting this week)
- new book
- published 10 years ago
- book in series

I'm certain I'll be able to help with these:
- finish two books
- read for an hour straight
- read 600 pages
- listen to 6 hours audiobook

I know I won't be able to help with the reading outside. It's already freezing here in Denmark.

I don't know yet if there are characters fightingin any of my books, and the same goes for eating. Unless of course we count Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body for that one, it is kind of what the book is about.

Now onto some reading. I'll check in later with an update for the day!

message 21: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1342 comments It's 6.47pm here in Adelaide. I read for over an hour outside this afternoon. So ticked off towards those ones 😀

message 22: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Thanks everyone, I'm having fun keeping track of all the books we're planning to read. :-)

I've updated message five of this thread so that all the books people are planning to read are listed against the categories they could fit into. Some of the categories overlap so we may have to decide as a team which category we want some books to count towards, but for now I've just listed each book against all the categories it could fit into. If I've missed any books please say and I'll update the list.

Marina - I've only included the first three books you listed, but if you want me to add the other two then just let me know.

Cheri - I think the rule about overlapping means that you can't use the same book for two categories that are the same colour. So, for example I couldn't use The Dogs of Riga for published ten years ago and book in a series (both green categories) but I could count it for published ten years ago AND a book for the AtY challenge (one green and one red category). I'm sure one of the mods will correct me if I'm wrong though!

AWESOME work Bryony! :)

I started The Breakdown last night and got about a third of the way through. But since I'm in EST time I should probably stick to the official launch time.

I'm excited to get "started" at noon and hopefully finish it today :D

message 25: by J (last edited Sep 17, 2017 05:31AM) (new)

J Austill | 1135 comments I didn't realize that this doesn't start until noon (EST). I had been trying to finish Howl's Moving Castle beforehand and it looks like I will. I'll go by the official times, then, which is 9 AM my time.

I plan to read:

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
- Author is POC
- New book
- In a series

The Men with the Pink Triangle: The True Life-and-Death Story of Homosexuals in the Nazi Death Camps by Heinz Heger
- Non-fiction
- ATY challenge book
- Article in title

Could also work on:
- Kids books (I often read to my daughter)
- a Manga (not sure which)
- Single sitting book/story
- read outside (it's quite nice here)
- read for an hour straight

message 26: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Wow Bryony, you are doing an amazing job. I'm happy I can just sit back, relax and read :-)

Laura, for the finished book I understand it as only books started during the read-a-thon counts and not books already started. Is that correct?

message 27: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Yes, so I'll be able to count the pages read after the read-a-thon starts and I'll likely read it for one straight hour. But I won't be able to count it as the one with the article in the title.

message 28: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments Thank you Bryony for bring so organized and being our captain:)

Happy reading everyone!

message 29: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments Thanks for the overlap explanation, Bryony! Since the list has already started to fill up, I'll try to list things that are still in empty slots:

B2 - novella/short story
What is Not Yours is Not Yours

B5 - a book for the ATY challenge
When They Severed Earth from Sky: How the Human Mind Shapes Myth

I1 - read outside
I can do 2 hours.

G3 - read a poem
I have lots of poetry books, will post which one it came from when I've read the poem!

for I4 - a character eats and G2 - 2+ characters fight: I'm sure I can get both of these, if I can count things as I finish two books I've already started before the challenge. Will that work?

I can add more later but it's almost time to start reading!! :)

Thanks so much for going to the trouble of organizing.

message 30: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Cheri, you can count books you've already started for I4 and G2 as long the action actually happens in the book during the read-a-thon i.e. you're reading those sections during the read-a-thon

message 31: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments Laura wrote: "Cheri, you can count books you've already started for I4 and G2 as long the action actually happens in the book during the read-a-thon i.e. you're reading those sections during the read-a-thon"

Thanks, Laura! I'm sure both these things will happen in the books, but I won't report it as done until it actually happens in something I've read after the Read-a-thon starts.

message 32: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Since I completely missed the start at noon ... time, I started my read-a-thon this morning (European time). I hope that is not a problem.
Because today I had a lot of reading time (4 hours in the car to and from a competition). Which means I could:
- start and finish: Dead and Gone
This can count toward: a book in a series (green), read for an hour straight/green in the rainbow/2+ characters fight/a character eats (black)
- and the book was 312 pages

Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse, #9) by Charlaine Harris

message 33: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I just read for one straight hour so that checks off my portion of I5.

I also had a character eat so we can definitely check off I4.

For my recommendation, I'm going to recommend The Ruins by Scott B. Smith. I think the premise sounds a little goofy so many would probably pass it up. Definitely for people who aren't squeamish but a great horror read.

I participated in Scrabble so we can check off Sunday's game.

message 34: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments My recommendation to the group:
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren
I actually read this book twice this year! I liked it so much that I recommended it to my book club -- I was just going to skim it before the discussion, but I liked it so much I reread the whole thing. The writing is amazing and the contents are fascinating: how a girl from a small Minnesota town who was dealing with certain issues (I won't say what so that I don't spoil it) manages to make an incredible if unusual life for herself as an academic scientist. It's a memoir, a true story.

message 35: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 117 comments Hi. I'm a little late checking in...sorry I had no access to the internet this weekend. I've started this morning with Shadow Prey (Lucas Davenport, #2) by John Sandford
It could fill in a few categories but I think they may already be filled?
It's over 10 years old, and it's in a series. I'm pretty confident that people will be fighting in it also : ). I've already read this book for over an hour straight today, so there is that also. I'm also reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier for my ATY challenge this week.

message 36: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments My book recommendation is Min mormor hälsar och säger förlåt by Frederic Backman, or for the non Swedish speaking My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry.

I read A Man Called Ove this year and loved it, but I liked the other book even more. Funny, but also a bit sad and I loved the fantasy world the grandmother created.

message 37: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments So far I've read and finished Firefly Lane, but I started it before the read-a-thon so I'm not sure how many tasks it fits.

The ones I'm sure of:
- I read for an hour straight
- I've read 179 in total
- a character travels

I'm not sure if it goes for the rainbow task, since it wasn't a book I started during the read-a-thon?
Sorry if I'm a little slow in understanding this.

message 38: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Yes, Marina H, you have the correct categories identified. And you're correct that you can't count it towards the rainbow.

The only other thing you could fill would be if you added it to a map or timeline.

message 39: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I'm slowly but surely understanding the rules. My excuse is visiting friends yesterday and maybe having a glass wine or two.

I'm off to bed now so I'll look into the map/timeline tomorrow and an update for what I manage to read before I go to sleep.
I look forward to see everybody's progress!

message 40: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Go Team Zombie! The readathon is only a few hours old and we've already finished four categories!

I've updated the tracking post with everyone's planned books and books read today. When a category has been completed but other team members are also reading a book that would count for it I will leave the book on the list in case we need to move books to different categories to complete any later tasks. If I have missed any books please say and I'll update.

For my book recommendation, I'm going to suggest Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez. I read this during the last readathon and loved it. It's a short book, I think around a hundred pages, and it's a wonderful introduction to Gabriel García Márquez if you haven't read any of his work before.

I have about 50 pages left of Case Histories so I'm off to finish that and hopefully I'll be able to read for one hour and then that'll be another category completed.

Happy reading everyone!

message 41: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments I am in the middle of Middlesex right now. I started it before the readathon but can count for the following:
- read for an hour outside (i just finished reading in my backyard)
- i completed 46 pages so far today.

I will check in later with my total pages for the day.

message 42: by Bec (last edited Sep 17, 2017 03:55PM) (new)

Bec | 1342 comments Ok checking in with the following:
pages read: - 124
audio - 13.5 minutes
read outside for an additional half an hour.
And I did read for over an hour, but I see that's filled already.
* I added Sula to the group reading timeline.

And I played the scrabble game....

I finished Sula - but I now realise as I was already 50 pages in this can't count as a finished book. I was 1.5 chapters into Her Secret Desire, but so I can count it I've started again this morning on the way to work at chapter 1.

message 43: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Finished The Breakdown! I wish I could count it for something more but since I was a third of the way done then that wouldn't be very fair.

But we still count it for 198 pages.

Mel | 177 comments I unfortunately started Burning Kingdoms late last night, before realizing the read-a-thon officially started at noon. But despite that, I managed to accomplish some stuff. :)

Here's what I've got:
-I5: Read for one straight hour
-G1: Read 230 pages!
-G2: 2+ characters fight
-G4: Played Scrabble

I also thought it'd be a good time to drop off my book recommendation for the group. I'm recommending The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma. It's a lovely, twisty read with gorgeously haunting writing and two very intriguing perspectives. It's cool seeing how they tie together (and how the narrators collide as the story goes on.)

Marina | 1312 comments Goodmorning zombies
Wow, we had a great start with this read-a-thon!

I ended up reading a total of 225 pages yesterday plus some in an e-book but it's easier to count the pages for that one when I'm done.
This morning I listened to my audiobook walking to work, so if that counts as reading outside I can add 35 minutes to that task.

My book recommandation is going to be The House of the Spirits. I read it this year for the magical realism prompt, and I loved it. It's well-written, fun and whimsical and with really interesting characters.

I started Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body before the challenge, so I guess we can't use it for the non-fiction or the person of color task.
It looks like J has two books we can use instead, but maybe we should make sure we have all tasks covered?

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Monday is already almost over for me, so here's my check-in:

I finished The Monarch of the Glen, a novella of 128 pages.

I read 30 pages of The Darkness That Slept and listen to 2 hours of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, including 30 minutes outside.

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Go Team Zombie! We had a great start to the read-a-thon. We've completed five categories already and read over 1400 pages together.

As Marina suggested, I checked to see which tasks we have covered already. This is where we're up to and where there are gaps.

1. Read a book by a person of colour
We have only one book planned for this and we need two. Does anyone have any books they might want to read that would fit this category?

2. Read the rainbow
We have nothing planned for the yellow cover. This can be a book you started before the read-a-thon so if you have anything that would fit here please say.

3. For the following categories we have exactly the number of books required in our plan, but it might be good to have some back up options just in case anyone's reading plans change:
+ Read three short stories or novellas
+ Read three YA, middle grade or children's books
+ Read a non-fiction book
+ Read two graphic novels or manga
+ Complete a book or story in one sitting
+ Read a poem

We're doing great on the read outside category (3 hours 35 minute of the 6 hours needed) and total pages read category (1418 of 6000 pages). We're making slightly slower progress on the audiobook category (just under 3 hours of the 30 hours needed) so audiobook fans please get listening. :-)

Other categories we should be able to complete easily are:
1. Add books to a map or timeline (1 out of 5 completed)
2. Recommend a book to the team (7 recommendations made, 4 left)
3. Strategise with our team. We need to get this thread to 175 posts, which gives us plenty of space to chat about what we're reading.

Hope this all makes sense and I haven't missed any updates, but please let me know if you spot any mistakes.

I'll update our progress either at the end of today or tomorrow. I live in London (5 hours ahead of EST) so end of today probably means more like 4pm EST. Until then happy reading everyone! :-)

Bec | 1342 comments Thanks Bryony. You are doing a great job! I'm going to add my total pages for my kindle book once I've finished it. But I read another 17 pages to my son tonight (that counts right!) and listened to another 20.5 hours of audio (I put it through the car when I picked my daughter up from girl guides 😀- I don't normally do that!)
