As you begin reading our October 2017 selection, feel free to share your first impressions here.

Vicki Willis Well, I haven't started the book, but I am planning on it this week. I loved the movie! And have wanted to read the book since I saw it many years ago. Marky Mark (he will always be Marky Mark to me) is my celebrity BF so, there is that too.
Ok, good to get that off my chest... Now to the book!

I need to get going on this too! I have owned the book for 20 years and drug it all across the country with me. Unfortunately, all my library holds are hitting right now, too.

Yup, he will always be Marky Mark!

Vicki Willis What do you think about the profiles of the people? The author is writing about them as almost lowlifes. Hard drinking, fighting, financially irresponsible.

That is a hard, hard job, both physically and emotionally. Lots of superstitions in this industry. I guess hindsight is 20/20.

Stephanie Dique | 49 comments 55 pages in so far and loving it. It gives the full vibe of the fisherman during their week off, without being overwritten or too descriptive. I find learning about this way of life so fascinating! (I never saw the movie.)

Meghan | 118 comments Just stopping in, also at page 55, to say that I don't mind it so far. It's giving me a whole new respect for my better half, who spent a month out at a time out on the Pacific commercial fishing.

Wow - having a significant other that close to the action would definitely add to your experience with this book!
