What a difficult book to evaluate without giving out spoilers! I think in general the book is magnificent! It is that because the characters are damaged and I disliked them but I found myself many times agreeing with them, because under the circumstances they were in, there was not other way to act.
I think this book is not only about a murder or a muder investigation. That is secondary. This book is about power. These are people with problems who create for themselves a difficult life and show a complete different image to the world. How easy is to fool your parents? Your students? Your neighbors? But can you truly fool your spouse? That person who knows your smell, your defects, your shortcomings? Even if at some point your relationship is not good anymore, that person knows you. he/she spends intimate time with you, knows your face and your sounds when you make love, has a shower while you pee, have you ever heard "knowledge is power"? Are you willing to give your spouse so much power? How much pain can be inflicted with that power?
This books also covers the power of media (tv, reporters, videos) which is interesting but I will not comment on it as the message is pretty clear in the books.
The structure of the book is good. It keeps you interested as it changes from his point of view to hers and back.
The characters are not likable but they are really interesting. Their personalities as adults a consequence of their past as children. I see they are meat for very good discussions.
I have read that many people didn't like the book because the characters are dark and twisted. I can only say a good book is a book that offers a lot to discuss, liking the characters is secondary. There are twisted people out there and this is a mirror of them.
Only reason why I don't give this more stars is that the end seemed too rushed

Also ich bin auch durch. Mir hat's gut gefallen. Interessante, wenn auch nichtigerer sympathische Charaktere, verstörend und spannend.
