I suspect the degree to which people hate to be imprisoned with their own thoughts and seek some kind of stimulus to distract them may depend upon how extroverted they are. We introverts are perfectly at home in our own thoughts and in fact, often resent being pulled out of them. Hey, here's an idea for a dystopia - extroverts are given implants that block distracting stimuli and are subjected to sensory deprivation - except for the time they spend in the service of some sadistic government or corporation, that gives them "hits" of pleasant stimuli as they work towards his evil goals. Somebody would make it into a movie!
