What did you make of the illustrations included in this book? Did you like the style? Did you think that the illustrations enhanced your reading experience in any way? Why or why not?

Ashley (ash57999) I honestly don't think I would have enjoyed the book nearly as much without the illustrations. What makes or breaks a lot of sci-fi and steampunk books for me, is whether or not I can picture all of the complicated machines and weapons. Since i've never heard of the "beasties" or machines mentioned in the book, i'd definitely have a hard time getting into the story without the pictures. They were very detailed and well drawn, i'd love a side book or novella of sorts with just illustrations and descriptions of all of the machinery and technology mentioned throughout this series.

EDIT: I just found out this exists: The Manual of Aeronautics: An Illustrated Guide to the Leviathan Series and I am very excited, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Ashley: Thanks for sharing the link to that book! I didn't know that this existed either. Looks awesome! I'm ordering a copy of the book right now to add to the library's collection.

If anyone wants to place a hold on The Manual of Aeronautics please visit or call the library and we can help you get your hands on this book. :)

Also: Did anyone out there listen to the audiobook rather than reading a paper copy? Knowing that the physical book is illustrated, did you feel like you were missing anything by not being able to see these illustrations? How do you think that listing to the book enhanced your experience? Do you think that hearing it read aloud made it easier to picture the descriptions? Why/why not?

Further general comments on the illustrations are still welcome as well.

Sarah | 9 comments Keith Thompson draws some beautiful illustrations! The drawings almost seemed to pop off the page. The illustrations were helping in depicting just what the beasties, walker, and characters looked like. The style was very unique and detailed as well. Sometimes I would go back in the book to look at them more. Adding them in with the text made it feel like you were there, watching the story take place as it happened. I really liked the story, but seeing it come to life is what made the book so special.
