Forest Park Public Library discussion

Our Reading Awake group meets monthly to discuss a book that engages readers in the complex and challenging issues of our time. On November 29th we'll be discussing Becoming Ms. Burton: From Prison to Recovery to Leading the Fight for Incarcerated Women. Would you recommend any books you've read recently that approached difficult or complex subject matter? We'd love to get fiction, nonfiction, and poetry recommendations for future meetups!

"The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir" by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich is a powerful story about dealing with your own demons as it relates to your past and trying to reconcile those with the bigger issues in the world. I suppose that sounds vague, but I don't want to say too much about the book. It can be hard to read at times, as it's extremely personal and poignant, but it's worth the struggle.

I've heard really good things about "Some of My Best Friends Are Black: The Strange Story of Integration in America" by Tanner Colby. "They Can Live in the Desert But Nowhere Else: A History of the Armenian Genocide" is on my list and I think would be a good choice for Reading Awake, as it covers a part of history and a genocide that is rarely talked about or well-known. It may be too historical, but I think any fictional narrative or non-fiction account about the Armenian Genocide should be considered.
