I think she turned him down and them got the idea of searching on her own, driven by vanity rather than curiosity.

I think the mirrors are used as Calla said as well. I think she turned Whelk down because she wanted to search on her own and wake the ley lines up on her own. Her ulterior motives are basically just selfishness and a need for power I believe.
