J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments When I was younger... I wanted to be older.

Dang... when did that concept flip?

70. LOUISA GETS SLAPPED by DarcyDeFirth - 4.5 stars
www.fanfiction.net/s/2953095/1/
Fun read! Caroline still can't accept Darcy's betrothal to Elizabeth. She makes the mistake of insulting Louisa's husband too often as well as the slap referenced in the title just before the Bennet family is due to arrive at Netherfield for a celebratory dinner. Good for a few chuckles at the payoff.

71. Do You See What I See? by J.D.Bell - 3.5 stars
www.fanfiction.net/s/11110346/1/
Another Caroline's-a-monster story, though there's a lot more to it than that. Love the incorporation of servants and their network of information-sharing that goes on starting with Wickham's arrival in Meryton. Caroline gets impatient to bring Darcy to heel and plans a staged compromise at Netherfield. Again, the Hursts are not exactly Caroline's friends here. I love the plot but not the writing. It's too wordy. 18 chapters that felt longer. Found myself skimming through a lot of it.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12875791/1/
Elizabeth Bennet and Caroline Bingley switched at birth! Loved the basic story. However, I felt that the political situation with Bretagne/Brittany needlessly confused the plot. Considering the royal British blood that's uncovered, I didn't see the point of adding the French royalty into Elizabeth's ancestry. The author obviously enjoys historical research, but this just muddied up an already very complex plot. There are also a few "okays" in there. It's unpublished, so I know it's unpolished, but that seems like too obvious a blunder not to mention. But it's a reasonable length and a whopping good tale, even if Caroline and Lydia make a rather unbelievable turnaround at the end.

120. Deception & Debauchery: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 4 stars

121. A Most Welcome Event by Trixfan - 4 stars
www.fanfiction.net/s/11207088/1/
Fairly short, very poignant. I was surprised and in tears at the end. Told from Mrs. Bennet's point of view, who "awakens" thinking she's only 19 years old and married to Mr. Bennet for only a few months. The story is excellent. The writing flows nicely despite the many, many, MANY spelling and punctuation errors.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments I've been reading, but I'm SOOOO far behind on my ratings and reviews!!

5. An Ever Fixed Mark by AMarguerite - 5 stars
http://archiveofourown.org/works/8523...
Awesome unpublished! A little bit paranormal (teenagers wake the morning of their 16th birthday with a "soulmark" on their wrist revealing the name of someone who will be significant in their lives), a little bit historical (Napoleonic war), a little bit Gone With The Wind (heartbreaking battlefield, heroine who's clueless that the hero loves her), and, of course, Pride and Prejudice. Very long, but really excellent for an unpublished work. If I recall correctly, content is clean, although homosexuality is accepted among many circles.

6. Pride by Jelach - 3 stars
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12301671/1/
Short one-shot. The new Mr. and Mrs. Darcy at the theater.

7. Making Her Sentiments Known by jvcla25 (Jack Caldwell) - 4 stars
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12778359...
Lady Catherine comes to Longbourn. Nice humorous twist on the usual! Short story.

8. An Inebriated Non-Proposal by BethW - 4 stars
https://www.dwiggie.com/derby/bethw9.htm
Darcy's realization that Elizabeth doesn't like him leads to him imbibing more alcohol than he should, which leads to a funny conversation between drunk Darcy and Elizabeth at the Hunsford parsonage. Short story.

9. "Is That Our Chambermaid in Disguise?" by Suzanne O - 5 stars
https://www.dwiggie.com/derby/suzo18.htm
(Suggest you also look at https://www.dwiggie.com/ for the picture on which the title caption is based)
This is an absolute hoot. Pride and Prejudice meets I Love Lucy! Short story.

10. Indifference to Decorum by Ms Pimprenelle - 3 stars
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12774592/1/
B. Elliot is Mr. Darcy's new secretary, but none of Darcy's relatives has ever met the mysterious Elliot until now. This short story explains why. Didn't really work for me.

11. Heat (definitely NOT JAFF) - 2.5 stars
Meh.

12. Destiny by Design- Leah's Journey - 4.5 stars
Highly recommend. This is NOT a variation, but it shows a strong Austenesque influence. Follows a young Jewish woman from 1900 to 1910, as her family is pushed out of their Russian homeland and must put down new roots in Argentina. History buffs will enjoy this even more than I did, but I found it very enjoyable and eye-opening regarding the ethnic discrimination the Abramovitz family faces. (Review to come when I finally get a chance to catch up!) It's in the K.U. program, and it's currently on sale for $2.99. (Price goes up in a couple of days, I think) Clean content.

13. All the Things I Know - 5 stars
Excellent modernization of Pride and Prejudice. Loved it. Be warned that there is sexual content, tastefully described.

14. The Advent Calendar by L.L. Diamond - 5 stars
Part I: http://austenvariations.com/advent-da...
Part II: https://lldiamondwrites.com/2017/12/1...
Part III: https://lldiamondwrites.com/2017/12/2...
Part IV (conclusion): http://austenvariations.com/advent-da...

Lovely Christmas season modernization of P&P. Short story.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments Sara, I've been watching the weather radar and thinking about you guys in Texas. Y'all are getting a little bit of everything and it is just sitting there.

I'm in south central KY and that train of precipitation reaches all the way from you to me and beyond... headed for Sheila. Yep. I just shoveled 4 inches of new powder off my deck and walkway. Thank goodness it didn't start until about 10:00 p.m. and was a dry powder.

The kids will hate it because it is too fine to make snowballs and snowmen. All the schools are closed today and they are already posting closed for tomorrow. Our temps are at 12 degrees and are expected to tank later tonight. I am now back inside and toasty warm with a book. It doesn't get any better that that.

message 15: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Colder in SC than usual, and we have snow in our forecast now too. Won't be that much of a weather event, though-- not like in other areas. Happy to be heading to the tropics on vacation this Sunday!!

Yeah, i've had to be home with kids 2 days in a row. Hard to read or get work done. (chuckle) but I made hubby help me today. Who knows if we can send them back to school tomorrow. I'm glad everyone is safe. You would laugh at us, the ice isn't sticking to the ground at least now yet but everything is shut down!

Mary | 245 comments Debbie-you're heading to the Tropics on Sunday?! Oh,safe journey, have a fantastic time and make every minute of your holiday count!😊🌹🎉🍷

message 18: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Thanks, Mary. Been looking forward to this for a while! Just Sunday to Friday (and Sunday and Friday are both travel days), but still... Headed for one of those swanky all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica. This time next week I'll be on an oceanside hammock with my kindle in one hand and a drink with a little umbrella in it in the other!

message 20: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments Debbie, I was going to ask if you were expecting bad weather. Looks like your vacation will spare you the trouble. Enjoy.

We are currently at 6 degrees and it is supposed to drop to 2 degrees. By this Sunday, we are expecting the temps to reach 60 degrees with rain and thunderstorms. Go figure. If you don't like the weather... wait a minute and it will change.

Lotsa sunscreen, big hat, and in the shade of a palm tree. (It's amazing how close the trees can be to the shoreline in Jamaica) I have rosacea, so I'm always SUPER careful about sunburn.

Yikes! Is that normal for wintertime in Norway, Elin? We're having all kinds of crazy storms and cold in the U.S.

message 29: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Definitely wise to take care in the Jamaican sun, Debbie! I once got sunstroke and second-degree burns there, just from taking a morning boat cruise.

message 30: by Anji (new)

Anji | 291 comments Have a wonderful holiday, Debbie.

Can't believe how low your temperatures get! I assume when you're talking about 2 degrees, you mean Fahrenheit? That's well below freezing isn't it? And the amount of snow you get makes ours pale into insignificance. Things get snarled up here in the UK as soon as one snowflake hits the roads, or so it seems!

message 31: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Freezing is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, Anji. I live on the coast of South Carolina, which is in the SE U.S. While usually it gets down around freezing perhaps 10 days scattered through the entire winter, this year we've been experiencing lots more of those cold days than that, strings of them in succession, and temps even have been down into the teens on occasion (with the dreaded wind chill below zero on particularly breezy days). The normal average winter temp is probably in the 50s here. Like you, even a tiny bit of snow shuts everything down and creates highway chaos in this part of the country!

Isn't it so Regency of us to be discussing the weather? I feel like I should be sipping tea from a bone china cup right now!

message 32: by J. W. (last edited Jan 19, 2018 05:54AM) (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments I am sure our friend Vaarin is going pfffft at our talking inches of snow when she is talking feet. The ability to handle any amount of snow rests in the hands of our state departments and the equipment that they have on hand.

Our southern states are not equipped to handle snow because they rarely... if ever... even see snow. So you have this antiquated equipment, little salt/sand or anything to treat the roads, and most of the population do not have chains, snow-tires or even good tread for that matter.

We become paralyzed... schools close and services are limited if not suspended. I received 4-days of mail yesterday. First time they have been able to get to us. Guess the old Postal Creed went out the window and is now driver discretion. But safety first... I understand.

I am in Kentucky which is sandwiched between what is knows as the north and the south. We get all kinds of weather. It changes daily. In fact we are expecting temps in the high 50's [F] by Sunday and expecting thunderstorms by Monday. Go figure.

Debbie, yes, that was a cute observation with us discussing weather. Very Regency... only my cup of tea is frozen to the saucer. I'll have to wait until the thaw in order to enjoy it.

message 33: by Debbie (last edited Jan 21, 2018 05:26PM) (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Okay. First evening in Jamaica at an all-inclusive resort. (We're in our room, and hubby's watching the football playoffs.) Free Wi-Fi! Yay! Might put up some reviews tomorrow since I got a lot of reading in on travel day today.

Good news: temp is delightfully warm. So nice to be wearing shorts and short sleeves outside... at night... and COMFORTABLE! Wonderful to not be wearing 3 layers (I always get cold easily).

Not so good news: Our travel agent sold us on this resort as the ultimate in luxury. Meh. Room we were given when we checked in had a leaky sink that dribbled water all over the place. Discovered this after we'd mostly unpacked. We've been moved into a comparable room, but the thermostat seems faulty- can't get it warmer than 19 degrees centigrade (67 degrees F). Brrrrr!

Good news: 9 different restaurants to choose from, and we picked Italian for the first night. Yummmm! Deeelish food!!

Observation: Lots of (younger) women all made up and dressed to the nines for dinner, but it's amazing how many boyfriends/husbands are dressed as if they're about to head out to a pickup basketball game with their buddies. What's UP with that???

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Had a great vacation! Perfect weather all week. Couldn't do a lot (no boating, no swimming, limited walking on the sand) because of my bum hips, but that meant I got plenty of time to read on my balcony overlooking the Caribbean and on a lounge chair next to the water. And, of course, there were the hours in airplanes and airports to kill both on the way down and the way back.

So I read a couple of GREAT books.... and some not-so-great ones. Here's my update:

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Your comments about your holiday gave me a chuckle, Debbie! I remember, before my hip surgery, thinking about all the things I didn’t want to resume doing (or being asked to do by others) and weighing the fact that I had a rock-solid excuse not to do them against the desire for pain relief. Ultimately I chose the pain relief, but I did give up reading time! Glad you had so many satisfying reads.
