What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Story is a gang of the king's men comes to a humble home to collect taxes, treats the dad roughly. Kid follows the gang to recover their gold, joins up with a couple friends, encounters a sleeping dragon. Bad guy ends up hanging in a pit and has to choose between letting go of his bag of gold in order to be saved, or plunging to his doom. He plunges. Beautiful illustrations, bedtime-length story, maybe 12x12 inches. Read this sometime around 2004-2010? Main character's name is either "Pustule" or "Carbuncle" (!)

Thom, the bump period for this group is 30 days because the group is so large.

My daughter vaguely recalls this book, though she remembers a character named "Muffin" and that the bad guys were like goblins.
Anybody have an idea? This is driving me nuts!

There are a series of books by Paul Warren about Muffin Pigdoom. There is also an Uncle Carbuncle.
